About BMHM
Black Mental Health Matters, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing mental health and wellness in the Black community. With more than 6 years of established programming, BMHM is currently scaling its work and expanding its funding base to support this growth.
Position Summary
BMHM is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Volunteer Grant Writer to help identify, pursue, and secure funding opportunities that support our mission. This is a remote, flexible volunteer role ideal for someone with strong writing skills who is passionate about mental health equity and nonprofit sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with BMHM's mission, programs, and current funding priorities (including general operating support)
- Draft, edit, and proofread compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting narratives
- Collaborate with BMHM staff/leadership to gather program data, outcomes, and organizational information needed for applications
- Track grant deadlines, submission requirements, and reporting timelines
- Maintain an organized calendar and database of prospective and submitted grants
- Assist with post-award compliance and reporting as needed
- Support the development of a compelling case for support and organizational boilerplate language

Qualifications
- Excellent written communication and storytelling skills
- Prior grant writing, fundraising, or nonprofit development experience preferred (not required)
- Strong research skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn about mental health, health equity, and/or the Black community's unique needs
- Proficiency with Google Workspace/Microsoft Office; grant management tools a plus

Commitment
- Flexible, remote volunteer position
- Estimated 3–5 hours per week (negotiable based on grant cycles and availability)
- Minimum 3-month commitment preferred
