Role Description
The Volunteer Independent Custody Visitor will make unannounced visits to police custody suites in Luton and Kempston to check on the welfare, rights, and entitlements of people detained by the police. This voluntary role involves speaking with detainees, reviewing custody records, and assessing conditions such as cleanliness, safety, access to medical care, and provision of food and hygiene items. The visitors will record findings in visit reports, highlight any areas of concern, and raise issues with custody staff in a constructive manner. Volunteers will attend training, briefings, and quarterly panel meetings to stay informed about custody procedures, safeguarding, and relevant legislation. The role supports independent oversight of police custody, helping to promote transparency, fairness, and public confidence in policing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
