Production Assistant — Black Mental Health Matters Show

Position Title: Volunteer Production Assistant

Reports To: Show Producer / Executive Producer

Employment Type: Volunteer

Time Commitment: 10–20 hours/week

Location: Remote

About the Show

Black Mental Health Matters is dedicated to amplifying conversations around mental health, healing, and wellness within the Black community. We're looking for a detail-oriented, creative, and passionate Volunteer Production Assistant to help bring our episodes to life — from scheduling through post-production and distribution. This is a great opportunity to build hands-on media production experience while contributing to a meaningful, community-driven mission.

Role Overview

The Volunteer Production Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the show, assisting with everything from pre-production planning to final content distribution across platforms. This role is ideal for someone passionate about storytelling, mental health advocacy, and content creation who wants to grow their skills while giving back.

Key Responsibilities

  • Scheduling & Promotion
    • Coordinate and manage the recording schedule for upcoming episodes, including guest bookings and studio/location logistics
    • Develop and execute promotional plans for upcoming episodes across social media and other channels
    • Create promotional materials (graphics, teasers, captions) in collaboration with the creative team

  • Documentary Compilation

    • Compile and organize recorded episodes into cohesive, powerful documentary-style films
    • Collaborate with the production team to identify strong narrative threads across episodes
    • Maintain an organized archive of raw and compiled footage
  • Video Editing & Clip Production

    • Cut and edit full episodes into short, impactful clips optimized for social media (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, etc.)
    • Ensure clips capture key emotional or informative moments that reflect the show's mission
    • Add captions, graphics, and branding elements to clips as needed
  • Audio Production

    • Convert video episodes into high-quality audio podcast format
    • Edit audio for clarity, pacing, and sound quality
    • Ensure consistent audio branding (intros, outros, transitions)
  • Distribution

    • Upload and publish audio episodes to podcast platforms (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube Music, etc.)
    • Manage podcast metadata, including titles, descriptions, tags, and episode artwork
    • Monitor platform performance and report on engagement metrics

Qualifications

  • Experience with video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar)
  • Experience with audio editing software (e.g., Audacity, Adobe Audition, GarageBand)
  • Familiarity with podcast hosting platforms (Spotify for Podcasters, Buzzsprout, Anchor, etc.)
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Understanding of social media trends and short-form content best practices
  • Passion for mental health advocacy and/or Black community storytelling
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working on a podcast, talk show, or documentary production
  • Basic graphic design skills (Canva, Photoshop, or similar)
  • Familiarity with mental health topics and sensitivity in handling related content
