We want volunteers to understand:

• what their role is;
• what LAW expects from them;
• what they can expect from LAW;
• who they should go to for support;
• where professional and regulatory boundaries lie; and
• how their contribution fits within LAW’s wider purpose.

The Coordinator will not be responsible for providing legal advice or supervising regulated legal work unless they are separately qualified, authorised and formally appointed to do so.

Key responsibilities

The role is likely to include:

• acting as an approachable point of contact for LAW volunteers;
• helping manage volunteer enquiries and expressions of interest;
• coordinating recruitment and onboarding;
• maintaining appropriate and accurate volunteer records;
• helping match volunteers’ skills, experience, interests and availability with suitable roles or projects;
• maintaining an overview of volunteer availability and organisational capacity;
• helping coordinate induction, training and relevant meetings;
• scheduling appropriate volunteer check-ins;
• monitoring whether volunteers are receiving adequate information and support;
• identifying potential training or development needs;
• supporting volunteer communications and engagement;
• encouraging effective communication between volunteers and relevant LAW leads;
• helping recognise and celebrate volunteer contributions;
• supporting volunteer feedback and exit processes;
• identifying where volunteer roles, guidance, policies or systems could be improved;
• helping LAW monitor volunteer involvement and impact;
• helping develop appropriate volunteer processes as LAW continues to grow; and
• working with LAW’s leadership and compliance functions so that confidentiality, safeguarding, data protection, professional boundaries and appropriate role allocation are maintained.

The Volunteer Coordinator would not be expected to manage every volunteer task personally. An important part of the role will be helping LAW establish an orderly system through which responsibilities can be allocated, monitored and appropriately followed up.

Who we are looking for

We would particularly welcome someone with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• volunteer coordination or volunteer management;
• HR or people management;
• charity or community-sector administration;
• recruitment and onboarding;
• team coordination or management;
• education or student support;
• public-sector administration;
• mentoring or coaching;
• staff or professional development; or
• project administration.

Previous legal-sector experience may be useful, but it is not required.

More important to us are strong organisational skills, reliability, good judgement, warmth, professionalism, and follow-through.

You should be comfortable communicating with people from different backgrounds, experiences and understand the importance of discretion and confidentiality.

Reasonable confidence using everyday digital systems such as email, Microsoft 365, shared documents, and simple records or trackers would also be helpful.

Because of the nature of LAW’s work, we particularly value sensitivity to safeguarding, vulnerability, trauma, dignity, and appropriate professional boundaries.

• has recently retired or reduced their working hours and would like to continue using their professional experience;
• previously worked in HR, management, education, the public sector, charities or community organisations;
• has experience managing or supporting teams;
• has previously volunteered and would now like to support other volunteers;

• or simply wants to use their experience in support of a meaningful social justice purpose.

We welcome interest from people aged 21-80 and all backgrounds.
