Harpenden Mencap's brand service LIFE launches in autumn 2026. It is a community-based day opportunities service for adults with learning disabilities.
LIFE stands for Learning, Involvement, Friendship and Employment.
What does the role involve?
We are looking for enthusiastic and skilled volunteers who would like to share their knowledge, experience and passions with adults with learning disabilities.
You might be a professional, someone who has retired from a particular career, or someone with a skill or hobby you love. Whatever your background, your experience could help an adult with learning disabilities learn something new, build confidence and discover their own potential.
We are particularly interested in people with skills and experience in areas such as:
- Horticulture and gardening
- Cooking, food and nutrition
- Carpentry, DIY and practical skills
- Fitness, sport and wellbeing
- Life coaching, confidence and communication
- Work, business and employability skills
- Travel and independence skills

What might you do?
Depending on your skills and interests, you could:
- Lead or support an activity based on your skills
- Share practical knowledge and demonstrate techniques
- Help participants develop new skills or work towards a project
- Help create a friendly, inclusive and enjoyable environment
You will be supported by the LIFE team and don't need previous experience of working with adults with learning disabilities.
What is the time commitment?
LIFE will run two sessions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sessions will typically last 2-3 hours. We are looking for volunteers who can ideally commit to one session per week, although we'd be happy to discuss what works for you.
Where is LIFE based?
LIFE is based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire (AL5). Volunteers must be able to travel independently to and from the venue. There are good public transport links in Harpenden which we can discuss with you if needed.

Do I need any formal qualifications?
You don't need to be a trained teacher or have previous experience working with adults with learning disabilities. We will work with you to make sure your skills and experience can be used in a way that works for you and the people attending LIFE.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. You will also undertake some initial instruction on Harpenden Mencap's procedures and policies.
