Vice President of DEVOPS & CMO Digital & Tech

The Vice President of DEVOPS & CMO Digital & Tech is a transformation tech leader who will drive forward the integrated transformation strategy on Tech, Digital, Data, and Analytics for GSK’s Development Operations (DEVOPS) and CMO functions within R&D. In this role you will be responsible for integrating clinical, biostatistics, clinical sciences, medical, regulatory, and quality systems (MedRegQ) across medicines and vaccines on a common Tech platform. You will also work to enable digital, data, and analytics solutions which will accelerate Development to best in the industry achieving cycle time reductions and significant cost improvements.

The role is focused on delivering technology, digital, data and analytics strategy and solutions to the DEVOPS and CMO functions globally, and leveraging technology, data and advanced analytics to drive clinical trial and regulatory efficiencies and effectiveness. The role is a key advisor to drive digital solutions including business as usual, reinvention, and disruption. VP, DEVOPS and CMO Digital & Tech

The role will join R&D Digital & Tech LT, DEVOPS LT, and CMO LT and lead continuous improvement of our product orientated capabilities (agile delivery, DevSecOps), obtaining full potential out of 3rd party strategic partners. The leadership role builds future leaders and provides coaching and support for direct reports who will join R&D leadership teams, including DEVOPS/CMO D&T LT.

You will be responsible for delivering significant strategic programs and oversee the delivery being executed by a combination of internal and external delivery teams. Technology is business critical for R&D from both a compliance perspective an enabler to accelerate medicines and vaccines discovery and development for patients, as well as a driver of efficient Development operations.

The leadership role will ensure interoperability between DEVOPS, CMO, Research, and the enterprise including Clinical and Commercial supply chain, to be compliant with regulations such as IDMP, but also to unlock value opportunities and identification of new transformational medicines and vaccines. This leader will partner with Enterprise AI function in alignment of the Technology & AI foundation that power data and AI in DEVOPS & CMO and across the Enterprise.

The role will provide leadership (directly or through delegation) to external consortiums which will establish a cloud-based platform for data exchange between sponsors and health authorities across the world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Single point of accountability and technology advisor to Head of DEVOPS and Chief Medical Officer business leadership with global operations and leadership and engagement of R&D Tech teams.
  • Contributes to the R&D Digital and Tech as a strategic, collaborative, and enterprise leader; raising organizational and capability issues, challenges as well as solutions and alternatives.
  • Leads technology, data, and analytics strategy development in close collaboration with business areas, including creating the 3 year pan and capability assessments.
  • Partners with the R&D leadership team stakeholders to calculating ROI for technology investments and uses information to facilitate prioritization and decision making.
  • Enables digital experiments, as endorsed by the DEVOPS/CMO Leadership team.
  • Orientates technology components into products and elevates team to a product management way of working including relentless customer focus, agile delivery with value in quarterly increments, and fit-for-purpose technology solutions that makes it easier to develop medicines and vaccines, and impactful for patients.
  • Collaborates with Commercial and Supply Chain Tech, to ensure an enterprise approach to operational systems and data, especially in the areas of Medical and Regulatory.
  • Drives the future into all solutions and tech products and always ready with digital “art of the possible”, integrating seamlessly technology, data, and advanced analytics into solutions.
  • Ensures systems are current (IT security) and robust (redundancy, scalability) and include latest features driving compliance in a heavily regulated business area.
  • Always, do the right thing with a focus on quality by design.
  • Delivers innovative value by surfacing insights and identifying improvements to process and information flow, and moves the current state to the future, including leveraging cloud platforms, data and advanced analytics, and intelligent automation (application of artificial intelligence), medical and scientific analytics, health care professional engagement, and transactional systems in regulatory, quality, and safety.
  • Provide input into the future digital health strategy, to align the strategy to strengthen the pipeline, unlock value for GSK therapeutic expertise, and provide more impact to patients.
  • Manages execution of technology roadmap with direct oversight of DevSecOps teams ensuring compliance with ITMS.
  • GSK R&D Tech manages legacy applications and in order to scale and manage with efficiency and compliance the legacy portfolio of applications, the leader will direct virtual teams who support the established Tech products.
  • Manages technology platforms like a business owner (e.g. Chief Product Manager), owning portfolio forecasts, and driving efficiency into teams and utilization of resourcing including consumption of licenses and 3rd party spend.
  • Coordinates external engagement and external innovation; ensure market trends are integrated into roadmap and communicated to R&D and Tech leadership team.
  • Responsible for delivering development and validation artefacts, ensuring high quality standards, and audit readiness.
  • Support the development of strategic partnerships with technology leaders, including ensuring 3rd party vendors deliver to contractual terms and conditions and value.
  • Provides enterprise leadership to R&D, R&D Tech, and Digital and Tech to accelerate culture change, including improvements to diversity and inclusion.

Basic Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a scientific discipline.
  • 15+ years of experience, working in a Pharmaceutical technology environment.
  • Experience in software engineering, at a leading biopharma, cloud, or technology SaaS company.
  • Experience with modern technology and cloud systems, and systems and technology relevant to business domain.
  • Experience with modern technology solutions, including data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data governance, software and platform engineering,
  • Experience working in regulated environments with compliance requirements related to GxP, data integrity, information security, and data privacy.

Preferred Qualification

  • A master’s degree of Doctorate would be preferred.
  • Experience working withing a Pharmaceutical technology environment in Development and Data technology would be preferred.
  • Demonstrated credibility with R&D leaders at an executive level.
  • Experience translating business needs into technology solutions.
  • Experience with traditional business analysis techniques including analysing value streams with various methods (lean, kanban, etc.) to identify opportunity area, leveraging analysis for data-driven priority setting.
  • Experience with modern design techniques, including simulations and creative design-thinking sessions to spark imagination and ideas to solve customer problems.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills, ability to influence sr. leadership and decision-making using data, market evidence.
  • Relentless for delivering business outcomes and value and simplification with a passion for science and advancing medicines to patients.
  • A thought leader with external/industry presence including contributions to industry consortia (PRISME, Transcelerate).
