Vice President, Finance Risk and Governance

About the Role

MUFG, one of the world’s most trusted and established financial groups, is seeking a Vice President, Finance Risk and Governance to join its London-based Finance Division. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to play a pivotal role in shaping the risk culture and governance framework of a global banking leader with over 360 years of history.

Responsibilities

As Vice President Finance Risk and Governance at MUFG in London, you will be instrumental in supporting the Head of Finance Risk in executing a robust risk management framework across EMEA operations. Your day-to-day responsibilities will see you partnering with key stakeholders from Finance through to Internal Audit and Compliance to ensure that all aspects of operational risk are identified, assessed, escalated appropriately, and remediated effectively.

  • Support the ongoing operation and enhancement of the Finance Risk Management Framework, ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide standards and regulatory expectations across all finance functions.
  • Lead the maintenance and periodic refresh of the Finance Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA), guaranteeing that risks, controls, and assessments remain accurate, relevant, and up-to-date.
  • Oversee the identification, assessment, escalation, and remediation of finance operational risk issues, emerging risks, and control weaknesses throughout the organisation.
  • Provide effective challenge to control owners and stakeholders regarding control performance, issue remediation strategies, and risk treatment plans to drive continuous improvement.
  • Support the development, monitoring, and reporting of Finance Risk Appetite metrics to ensure informed decision-making at senior management levels.
  • Coordinate comprehensive risk assessments across finance functions by ensuring robust challenge processes, appropriate documentation standards, and timely completion of all required activities.
  • Review non-SOX control testing outcomes by providing independent oversight along with actionable recommendations to improve overall control effectiveness.
  • Perform thematic reviews, deep dives, root cause analyses of risk events or near misses, assessing adequacy of remediation actions while validating evidence supporting issue closure.
  • Produce high-quality risk reporting and management information for senior management committees by analysing complex data sets to identify trends or areas requiring attention.
  • Build strong relationships across Finance, Operational Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit, Business Management functions while supporting delivery of risk training initiatives to strengthen organisational risk culture.

Requirements

To excel as Vice President Finance Risk and Governance at MUFG you will bring extensive hands-on experience from operational risk roles within major banks or regulated financial institutions.

  • Significant experience in Operational Risk Management or related fields such as Internal Controls or Audit within banking or regulated financial services environments is essential for success in this position.
  • A deep understanding of Operational Risk Management frameworks, including RCSAs (Risk & Control Self-Assessments), issue management protocols, control testing methodologies and their application within large organisations is required.
  • Demonstrable experience conducting comprehensive risk assessments, control evaluations, thematic reviews as well as root cause analysis is vital for this role.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex risk data sets using advanced Excel skills or other data analysis tools; experience preparing high-quality management information for senior forums is highly desirable.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills are necessary; you must be able to constructively challenge peers while building credibility across all levels within multinational teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are crucial for preparing committee materials or presenting findings clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint plus familiarity with GRC (governance/risk/compliance) systems is expected; experience leveraging AI-enabled solutions or automation tools would be advantageous.
  • Experience working within global banking organisations, particularly those operating across EMEA regions and collaborating with international stakeholders is preferred.
  • Professional qualifications such as ACA/ACCA/CIA/CRMA/FRM (or equivalent) would be beneficial but not mandatory if balanced by substantial practical experience.
  • A continuous improvement mindset combined with strong organisational skills enables you to manage multiple priorities efficiently even under demanding conditions.
