Build the Engineering Foundation Behind the Future of Autonomous Operations

SkyBound is at an exciting point in its growth. We're winning new projects, expanding our technology teams, and continuing to invest in the software, AI, robotics, and autonomous systems that sit at the heart of the business. We're looking for a VP of Technology to serve as the right hand to our CTO and help drive the next phase of that journey.

This role offers a rare opportunity to operate at the intersection of engineering leadership, technical vision, and cross-functional execution. Acting as a strategic multiplier across Software, Data & AI, Robotics, and Infrastructure, you will oversee the technical engine that makes SkyBound work. You will hold the freedom and authority to establish best-in-class engineering standards, scale multi-disciplinary teams, and align our complex technical capabilities directly with commercial delivery.

If you enjoy driving high-level technical strategy, bringing clarity to multi-faceted engineering domains, and having a direct, visible impact on the growth of an ambitious technology company, this is the role for you.

About SkyBound

SkyBound delivers automated drone operations for critical national infrastructure, providing real-time aerial intelligence to support safety, security and faster decision-making.

We combine software, AI and remote operations, with systems managed from our Southampton-based 24/7 control centre and deployed across the UK in some of the most complex airspaces to enable rapid response and continuous site awareness.

As we continue to scale, we are looking for a driven VP of Technology professional to join the team and help shape the future of autonomous operations.

Why This Role Is Different

We are at a defining stage where the architectural, organisational, and technical decisions made over the next 12 to 24 months will directly shape the long-term trajectory of the business. You will join at a high-momentum moment when major customer contracts are being executed, our multidisciplinary technology division is expanding rapidly, and significant capital is being invested into AI, computer vision, and hardware-software autonomy.

Rather than managing a single silo or maintaining legacy corporate bureaucracy, this role sits right at the centre of innovation. Serving as the CTO’s right hand, you will oversee how Software, Data & AI, and Robotics integrate into a cohesive, dependable platform. You will step in to resolve complex engineering bottlenecks, build scalable cross-department delivery frameworks, and mentor senior leaders across the technical organisation. It is a genuine opportunity to leave your mark on a business rather than simply maintaining someone else's systems.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Be Doing

As VP of Technology, your time will be split between strategic technical execution, operational leadership, and unifying our core engineering domains. You will work side-by-side with our CTO to turn high-level autonomous operational goals into robust, scalable engineering roadmaps.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Executive Technical Leadership: Serving as the primary technical partner to the CTO, overseeing technology delivery across Software, Data & AI, and Robotics, and stepping in as a key escalation point for critical system architecture decisions.
  • Architecture & Multi-Domain Integration: Ensuring seamless interoperability between cloud software, edge AI models, real-time data pipelines, and hardware/drone robotics integrations.
  • Engineering Standards & Governance: Setting the benchmark for code quality, architectural integrity, technical documentation, security, and deployment practices across all engineering squads.
  • Team Scaling & Mentorship: Mentoring engineering leads, fostering a high-performance culture, and driving recruitment to attract top-tier software, AI, and robotics talent.
  • Cross-Department Alignment: Working closely alongside our Remote Operations, Product, and Commercial teams to ensure engineering delivery directly supports customer deployments across UK infrastructure.

Our Technology Ecosystem

You will oversee a modern, multi-layered technology stack built for real-time responsiveness, autonomy, and scale:

  • Software & Cloud Architecture: React, TypeScript, Node.js, microservices, and AWS serverless infrastructure.
  • Data & Artificial Intelligence: Real-time data streaming, computer vision, automated incident detection, edge-deployed ML models, and geospatial/mapping technologies.
  • Robotics & Remote Operations: IoT device integrations, telemetry protocols, BVLOS control room software, and autonomous fleet management systems.

What We're Looking For

We are far less interested in rigid job titles and far more interested in strategic capability, breadth of technical knowledge, and executive impact. You might currently be working as a VP of Technology, VP of Engineering, Director of Engineering, Head of Technology, or CTO at a scaling startup.

What matters most is that you combine deep technical literacy across software and hardware ecosystems with a proven capability to lead and empower engineering organisations:

  • Proven Engineering Leadership: You have successfully scaled and managed multidisciplinary technical teams, established overarching technology strategies, and driven complex software or hardware products to market.
  • Strategic Partner to Leadership: You excel at working alongside C-suite stakeholders to convert complex technical roadmaps into business outcomes, while maintaining an acute eye for architectural resilience.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Breadth: You possess strong, well-rounded technical intuition across software systems, data/AI pipelines, and physical-digital integrations (IoT, edge computing, or robotics).
  • Agile & Scale-Up Mindset: You thrive in fast-paced, high-growth environments where you can introduce structure without impeding velocity, innovation, or autonomy.
  • Experience within scale-ups, SaaS, AI, computer vision, robotics, IoT, aerospace, or autonomous systems is particularly valuable.

What You'll Get

  • Competitive salary (£100,000 - £130,000)
  • Remote-first working model with flexible hours
  • Direct partnership with executive leadership and key decision-makers
  • Significant influence over company strategy, architecture, and organisational culture
  • The opportunity to build something genuinely meaningful alongside a world-class team solving fascinating technical problems

Most importantly, you'll join SkyBound at a stage where your leadership, technical vision, and execution will have a direct, visible impact on both our technological capability and the future of the company.
