Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

As a Band 6, you will provide clinical leadership, coordinate the day-to-day running of the Acute Oncology Unit, support and develop junior staff, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the service.

You will be forward-thinking, innovative, able to delegate effectively, and committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Working alongside consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in ensuring patients receive timely, safe and effective care while supporting the Trust's commitment to delivering excellent cancer services.

• Provide professional clinical and operational leadership, acting as a role model and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised nursing care for patients presenting with oncological emergencies and complications of cancer and its treatment.
• Coordinate the day-to-day running of the Acute Oncology Unit, including admissions, patient flow, bed management and workforce allocation to ensure the safe and effective delivery of care.
• Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive patient records, ensuring compliance with Trust policies, professional standards and regulatory requirements.
• Promote effective multidisciplinary working by building strong relationships with consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless patient care.
• Support, supervise and develop junior staff and students, fostering a positive learning environment and a cohesive team culture.
• Demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritise workload, delegate appropriately and respond effectively to changing clinical demands.
• Lead by example in promoting evidence-based practice, quality improvement and service innovation, ensuring care is informed by current research and best practice.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the Acute Oncology Service and support the delivery of Trust and national cancer priorities.
• Develop specialist knowledge and skills through continuous professional development, including opportunities to complete UKONS Telephone Triage training and courses such as Introduction to Cancer Care and Fundamentals of Cancer Care.
• Participate in the 24/7 rota, demonstrating flexibility to meet the needs of the service.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

• Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
• Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
• Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
• Ward management experience
• Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
• Experience in an acute hospital setting
• Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
• Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice

Desirable criteria

• Experience in handling adverse events and complaints
• Appraisal skills
• Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
• Some insight into budget management
