Based in Essex and operating from two large warehouses in Basildon, the company is a leading distributor for VWR (part of Avantor), Thermo Fisher Scientific, and other major manufacturers. Its dedicated team is known for reliable service, efficient delivery, and a friendly, customer-focused approach. R & L Slaughter supplies NHS and private laboratories, industrial sectors, breweries, universities, STEM programs, and local schools, providing trusted expertise and a positive working relationship to a wide range of clients.
Role Description
The Warehouse Operative / Relief Driver is a full-time, on-site role based in Basildon. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Receiving and unloading deliveries
- Checking goods against documentation
- Safely storing, picking, and packing products for dispatch
- Operating material handling equipment
- Maintaining an organized and clean warehouse environment
- Following established health and safety procedures

As a relief driver, the position includes:
- Loading vehicles
- Delivering orders to customers across London and the South East
- Representing the company professionally during customer interactions
The role requires:
- Accurate record-keeping
- Collaboration with colleagues
- Flexibility to support other warehouse tasks as needed
Qualifications
- Experience with core warehouse operations, including unloading, packing, and general material handling.
- Ability to operate forklifts or other material handling equipment; valid forklift certification is an advantage.
- Strong awareness of health & safety practices, with a commitment to safe working and manual handling procedures.
- Clean and valid driving licence suitable for light commercial vehicles; previous delivery experience is beneficial.
- Good attention to detail, basic numeracy and literacy skills, and ability to accurately follow delivery and stock documentation.
- Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented warehouse environment.
- Physical capability to handle regular lifting, moving, and loading tasks in a busy warehouse setting.
- Previous experience in distribution, logistics, or a laboratory supply environment is an advantage but not essential.

Additional Information
Due to the nature of our products, the successful candidate will be required to complete an ADR (Carriage of Dangerous Goods) qualification. Full support will be provided to obtain this certification.
