Wargaming Senior Operational Analyst
As a Wargaming Operational Analyst within Matrix Pro Services, our core purpose is simple yet vital: to keep the warfighter safe and save the taxpayer money through the application of Wargaming and Operational Analysis.
You will be at the forefront of solving complex, high-consequence problems across UK Defence, the National Security sector, and with overseas allies. You will bridge the gap between abstract mathematical modelling and real-world mission success, ensuring stakeholders have the defensible evidence required for critical investment and strategic decisions. Familiarity with professional wargaming tools such as Command Professional Edition, Flashpoint Campaigns, or Combat Mission is a distinct advantage (though not a prerequisite).
You won’t just be crunching numbers; you will be translating data into an authoritative narrative that shapes the future of operational capability.
Our Approach to Experience: We welcome diverse routes into this role, whether your background is military, academic, public sector or an adjacent analytical discipline. Experience with every listed tool is not expected; we are most interested in analytical thinking, communication, intellectual curiosity, and a drive to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Task Scoping & Delivery: Autonomously scope, structure, and complete work packages end-to-end, taking self-directed ownership of deliverables from problem definition through to final delivery.
- Analytical Selection & Decision Support: Identify and apply the most appropriate operational analysis techniques to solve unstructured defence problems, interrogating complex datasets to extract meaningful, evidence-based insights.
- Wargaming & Model Development: Design, build, and maintain analytical models and simulations. Confidently facilitate and lead wargames, utilising tools like Command Professional Edition, Flashpoint Campaigns, or Combat Mission, to stress-test concepts and evaluate operational trade-offs.
- Customer Engagement & Briefing: Confidently lead presentations and briefings to customers and senior military stakeholders, positively challenging assumptions and converting complex data into plain-language military implications.
- Quality Assurance & Mentorship: Review analytical outputs to maintain high technical rigour and ensure methodological defensibility.
- Authoring & Technical Translation: Deliver high-standard, Dstl-style technical documentation and reports that clearly articulate findings, risks, and strategic recommendations to non-analysts and allied partners.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
