The opportunity
We are recruiting Warranty Support Technicians for a long-term contract opportunity based at the brand-new Taff's Well rail depot in Cardiff. Working on the Class 398 Citylink fleet, you will join a technical team responsible for supporting new vehicles during their warranty and introduction into service period. The role will involve a combination of electrical and mechanical fault finding, warranty repairs, modifications, functional testing and technical investigations.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Rolling Stock Technician or Engineer looking for a circa two-year contract assignment working on a modern fleet of tram-train vehicles.
You will be responsible for:
- Carrying out electrical and/or mechanical warranty repairs on Class 398 vehicles.
- Diagnosing faults and identifying root causes across a range of train systems.
- Completing hardware modifications and modification campaigns across the fleet.
- Undertaking functional testing and sign-off following repairs and modifications.
- Working across systems including high and low voltage, TCMS, propulsion, doors, brakes, bogies and vehicle body systems.
- Reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
- Investigating repeat failures and supporting the resolution of more complex technical issues.
- Supporting condition monitoring and performance investigations.
- Recording completed work, materials and technical findings accurately within the asset management system.
- Producing clear technical reports covering defects, repairs and investigations.
- Supporting warranty claims and post-incident investigations where required.
- Ensuring removed components are correctly recorded and returned for repair, overhaul or investigation.
- Assisting with materials management, stock control and preparing component kits for upcoming modifications.
- Liaising closely with commissioning, production, engineering and depot teams.
- Working in accordance with all relevant safety, quality and environmental procedures.

What we're looking for
A recognised electrical, electronic or mechanical engineering apprenticeship/qualification, ideally to NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC or equivalent.
Strong practical experience within rolling stock maintenance, commissioning, warranty or fleet modification.
Experience working on trains, trams, tram-trains or similar rail vehicles.
Strong electrical and/or mechanical fault-finding skills.
The ability to confidently read electrical or mechanical schematics and drawings.
Experience investigating technical faults and identifying root causes.
A good understanding of safe systems of work within a maintenance or production environment.
Experience completing technical documentation and maintenance records.

Basic IT competency, including Microsoft Office and electronic maintenance/asset management systems.
A practical, hands-on approach with the ability to work effectively as part of a technical team.
Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
- Stadler Citylink or similar tram/light rail vehicles.
- New fleet introduction or commissioning.
- Rolling stock warranty support.
- Fleet modification programmes.
- TCMS and vehicle control systems.
- Train propulsion, braking and door systems.
- High and low voltage electrical systems.
- Stock and materials control.
- Preparing component kits for modification campaigns.
- Post-modification functional testing.
- Technical investigations and root cause analysis.
