The Warwick Mathematics Institute invites applications for the post of Warwick Zeeman Lecturer (WZL), to start in September 2027. We have two positions available, open to all areas of pure and applied mathematics.
WZLs are temporary appointments for a fixed term of three years. They offer the opportunity to join an excellent mathematics department, with plenty of time to pursue independent research while gaining the experience in lecturing and administration that will strengthen any future application for a permanent academic position.
About You
All applicants should hold a PhD and have already demonstrated excellence in research and an ability to teach effectively.
We are seeking applicants who can make a strong contribution to both our research and our teaching, and who will make the most of the opportunities provided by our lively and vibrant departmental culture.
In the past, many WZLs have extended the term of their appointment by combining this post with a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship and this gives a good indication of the kind of career stage and level of independence we expect for this position.
For details on the experience and skills required, please refer to the job description attached as a PDF below.
About The Department
The Warwick Mathematics Institute is internationally recognised for its research and our best undergraduates are a match for those at any other UK university. We are one of only five UK mathematics departments in the world top 30* and we are the 5th highest UK mathematics department in the Complete University Guide**. We run a wide range of weekly seminar series, and many workshops and conferences, for which our Mathematics Research Centre provides organisational support.
- A list of our staff and their research interests can be found at https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/research/researchers
- You can see our undergraduate module pages at https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/currentstudents/ughandbook
The department encourages the career advancement and promotion of all its staff. All Zeeman Lecturers have a mentor and a more formal, supportive, annual review of their progress.
We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment, and we actively encourage applications from groups that are under-represented in UK mathematics. We are working hard towards improving our gender balance: we currently hold a Bronze Athena Swan award and our energetic Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion committee plays a significant role in shaping departmental policy.
We are an internationally diverse department. For those eligible, the University offers relocation and Immigration Support Scheme packages to assist with costs of relocating and any associated visa applications and HIS (health) surcharge fees.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

How to Apply
Closing Deadline: Sunday 18 October 2026 at 11:55pm (UK Time)*
Please read the following carefully before submitting an application. You can find more details about what we expect in your application documents on the department’s vacancies page.
Applications Should Include
- A covering letter,
- A research statement, and
- A full CV.
Your covering letter (no longer than two pages) should start with a brief indication of your research field in order to help us identify your subject area quickly (for example “Probability: percolation and other lattice models”; “Machine Learning: mathematical foundations). It should also include a brief summary of your research and its impact for a non-specialist audience. You may also use your letter to highlight any aspects of your experience that are particularly relevant to the selection criteria, but you need not repeat information already included in your CV.
We value and respect diverse gender identities and expressions, and encourage applicants who wish to do so to share their preferred personal pronouns (e.g. he/him, she/her, they/them) with us in this letter too.
Your research statement should be no longer than 4 pages of 11pt text. Here you should summarise your research achievements to date and how you plan to develop your research programme at Warwick. You may wish to comment on how the Warwick environment, including potential collaborators and other resources, would support your plans.
Your CV should contain a full list of your publications, any grants or prizes that you have been awarded, and a summary of your teaching experience. Because terminology varies between institutions and countries, please indicate briefly the responsibilities associated with any teaching positions you have held. We do not ask for a longer teaching statement.
We encourage applicants to include in their CV details of any career breaks or other circumstances that may have affected their research, teaching or professional activities.
An appointments panel of around 12 members of academic staff representing a broad range of subject areas in the department are responsible for choosing candidates to invite to interview. Typically the panel meets twice: once to produce a longlist, and once to decide which candidates to invite to interview.

Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
Your application documents will be made available to all permanent academic staff in the department, whose comments are used to inform the considerations of the appointments panel.
You will need to provide the names and contact details of three referees as part of your application. These will need to be entered on the application webform and should not appear elsewhere in your application.
We will request references directly from referees for all longlisted candidates and these will be used to assist the panel’s decisions on who to invite for interview. We currently expect to make this longlisting decision on 16th November, and will hope to receive all references by 23rd November, so please make sure your referees are aware of this timescale.
Those selected for interview will be invited to the department to give a talk on their research on Monday 25th January 2027, followed by a formal interview on Tuesday 26th January 2027. These dates have already been fixed to ensure the availability of the Chair of Faculty and cannot be changed.
Interview Date: 25th and 26th January 2027 (attendance required both days)
Start Date: September 2027
Applications must be submitted through the warwick-careers.tal.net portal before the closing deadline. We recommend completing your application form in good time, as the advert will automatically close at the deadline.
