About The Role
Days of Working: You will be required to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service, typically Monday - Friday but may include weekend working.
As the Waste Compliance Manager and Responsible person for waste for the OCS SLaM contract, you will oversee all waste management operations across the sites, ensuring compliance with in line with the contract specification, environmental legislation, health and safety standards, and OCS/Trust policies. This role is key to supporting the OCS and Trust key sustainability objectives and ensuring efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible waste practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop waste management policies, systems, and procedures in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders, in order to meet the Government’s waste segregation compliance targets. Including:
- Daily oversight of clinical waste contractor(s)
- Monitoring collection performance, missed lifts, container issues
- Verifying waste streams (offensive, infectious, pharmaceutical)
- Tracking consignment notes and Duty of Care documentation in real time
- Produce and review Risk Assessments to determine the priorities for achieving a compliant waste management system.
- Work with departments (clinical and non-clinical) including relevant Estates and Facilities in aligning the local Standard Operational Procedures with the Waste Management and Handling Policy. Including:
- ERIC waste return validation info to SLAM
- PAM evidence collection for waste & environment
- SLaM sustainability board reporting
- Carbon reporting (Scope 3 calculation for waste)
- Work with departments to create suitable training packages and ensure its implementation and ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
- Ensure robust auditing processes are in place to monitor compliance of waste operations during the waste handling process (point of production, intermediate storage, transfer and final disposal). Taking ownership of reports including KPIs and data is up to date.
- Complete the below responsibilities:
- Compactors, balers, cardboard presses
- Waste yard daily checks
- Sharps bin distribution & stock control
- On site storage compliance (segregation, max storage limits)
- Liaise with key stakeholders in reviewing policy and standard operational procedures.
- Update and action Business Continuity Plans for waste Management Activities across the sites working with key stakeholders.
- Be responsible for managing and complying with all statutory instruments and guidance in relation to environmental performance ensuring best practice related to the effective operation across SLaM. Including:
- HTM 07 01 oversight
- NHS England waste framework compliance
- Consignment & hazardous waste audits
- Annual Pre Acceptance Audits (legal requirement)
- Quarterly hazardous waste return management
- Waste carrier licence checks for all contractors/subcontractors

Ideal Candidate Criteria:
- Must have Right to Work in the UK and be willing to undertake a DBS
- Must have a UK Driving licence
- Lead Environmental Auditor
- Desirable: Degree or professional qualification in waste management, environmental science, or facilities management.
- Degree or equivalent training in Environmental Management, Sustainability or associated discipline
- Advanced environmental management training (Level 3 or above) including auditing to ISO14001 standards
- Formal project management qualification e.g. PRINCE2 etc
- Member of the Institute of Environmental Management (IEMA)
