Wastewater Operator
JOB SUMMARY
The Wastewater Operator performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, technical, and maintenance tasks as required within the Wastewater Division of the Public Works Department. The position requires operating specialized equipment and receiving administrative policy, direction, and annual performance evaluations from the Wastewater Superintendent.

The position is covered by Local 150. Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. The employee must be able to work overtime and respond to after-hours emergency calls, including holidays and weekends, on a rotating basis.

Qualifications
OPERATOR I QUALIFICATIONS: Education and/or Experience: Requirements include a high school diploma or G.E.D. Know about wastewater treatment and distribution, including the operation of pumps and associated treatment equipment. The employee is to have experience working in a Class 1 Wastewater Facility. Certificates, Licenses, Training: A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required upon hire. A Class B CDL or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date—possession of a Class 3 or 4 or higher IEPA Wastewater Supply Operator certification. Have a basic knowledge of wastewater treatment and distribution, including the operation of pumps and associated treatment equipment. Knowledge of lift stations. Have a basic understanding of plumbing and electrical principles.
OPERATOR II QUALIFICATIONS: Education and/or Experience: Requirements include a high school diploma or G.E.D. Have knowledge of wastewater treatment and distribution, including operating pumps and associated treatment equipment. The employee is to have experience working in a Class 1 Wastewater Facility. Certificates, Licenses, Training: A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required upon hire. A Class B CDL is required upon hire or must be obtained within 6 months of the hire date. Possession of a Class 2 IEPA Public Wastewater Operator certification. Knowledge of equipment used in the wastewater treatment process and maintenance, operations, and repair of equipment associated with the wastewater treatment process and lift stations. Have a basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems.

Have knowledge of wastewater treatment and collection, including operating pumps and associated treatment equipment. The employee is to have experience working in a Class 1 Wastewater Facility. Certificates, Licenses, Training: A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required upon hire. A Class B CDL is required upon hire or within 6 months of the hire date. Possession of a Class 1 IEPA Public Wastewater Operator certification. Knowledge of equipment used in the wastewater treatment process and maintenance, operations, and repair of equipment associated with the wastewater treatment process and lift stations. Have a considerable understanding of plumbing and electrical principles, including electrical testing equipment and meters, and be able to diagnose and make minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
Special Requirements
The successful candidate must be able to carry, lift, push, pull, and drag objects up to 50 pounds on a frequent and/or continuous basis. Candidates must demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills and the ability to perform all tasks safely and professionally.
