Water/Sewer Service Worker
Job Description
Job Summary
The Water/Sewer Service Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of municipal water distribution and sewer collection systems. This position involves fieldwork under varying weather conditions, operation of specialized tools and equipment, and adherence to safety and environmental regulations. Work is performed under general supervision and may require being on call for emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
Water System Duties
- Install, maintain, and repair water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and meters.
- Locate and repair leaks, breaks, and other system defects.
- Flush and disinfect water lines as required.
- Test, read, and replace water meters.
Sewer System Duties
- Install, inspect, and repair sewer lines, manholes, and related infrastructure.
- Clear blockages and perform routine sewer cleaning.
- Assist with video inspection of sewer mains and laterals.

Equipment Operation
- Operate trucks, backhoes, trenchers, and other light-to-heavy equipment.
- Use hand tools, pumps, pipe cutters, tapping machines, and other specialized equipment.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow OSHA, state, and local safety regulations.
- Work in confined spaces and trenches in accordance with safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities.
Customer Service
- Respond to service requests and emergencies in a professional and timely manner.
- Communicate effectively with residents, contractors, and team members.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Have or must be able to obtain Min Class D Water/Waste Water license during probationary period.
- Experience in water/sewer maintenance or construction preferred.
- Knowledge of water/sewer systems, tools, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Ability to read maps, blueprints, and work orders.
- Physical ability to perform heavy labor under various weather conditions.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Frequent lifting of objects up to 75 lbs.
- Standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and wastewater.
- Rotating on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
