Job Description
Overview
Are you a safety engineer looking to develop specialist experience in weapons, ordnance, munitions and explosives? Do you want to work across high-hazard systems, trials, integration and through-life activities while building your capability with experienced specialists?
We’re expanding our defence WOME safety capability. Join us and support safety engineering and assurance across conventional and novel technologies, from acquisition and platform integration through trials, qualification, operation and disposal.
AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering services and nuclear organisation delivering complex and critical programmes across defence, aerospace, nuclear and other highly regulated sectors.
Join our established Safety & Environmental Assurance community; knowledge sharing and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. You’ll benefit from:
- Formal technical assurance, peer review and access to experienced WOME safety specialists.
- Domain Communities of Interest and professional networks.
- Regular team meetings, knowledge-sharing events and informal mentoring.
- Career development support aligned wherever possible to your experience, interests and goals.
We aim to align assignments with your skills, interests and career goals while balancing client and business needs. We welcome WOME specialists and safety practitioners from industry, MOD and the Armed Forces, including those transferring from air, land or maritime domains and those returning after a career break. Assignments could include:
- Safety engineering and assurance across weapon, munition, explosives, system and integrated-platform levels.
- Safety assessment and assurance of conventional and novel weapon integration, including Directed Energy Weapons, across land, air and maritime platforms.
- Safety support to trials, test and evaluation, verification and validation, qualification and introduction into service.
- Explosives safety and ordnance assurance covering storage, transport, handling, operation, maintenance, disposal and other through-life activities.
Your role
You will deliver proportionate WOME safety engineering and assurance across conventional, novel and complex defence projects. Working with experienced specialists, you will develop clear safety arguments and evidence, support the identification and management of hazards and risks, and help clients make informed decisions across the capability lifecycle.
- Support the development and maintenance of proportionate WOME safety cases, safety assessments, safety management plans and supporting evidence.
- Identify, assess and manage hazards and risks across weapon, munition, explosives, system and platform boundaries, including integration and through-life activities.
- Create and maintain hazard logs, derive and manage safety requirements, and support the demonstration that risks are reduced to a tolerable level.
- Develop clear safety arguments and manage evidence supporting acquisition, trials, qualification, acceptance, introduction into service and continued operation.
- Apply relevant legislation, regulations, standards and good practice to WOME safety activities.
- Produce high-quality technical reports and contribute to safety working groups, hazard reviews, assurance reviews and multidisciplinary engineering decisions.
- Work effectively with clients, operators, designers, delivery partners, suppliers, trials organisations and assurance authorities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
