Role Overview
ABASK operates on Shopify Plus. Today, all site development is delivered by our agency, BAO, who work to a house coding style built to be lightweight, fast, flexible and future-proofed – keeping our site SEO-optimised, scalable, accessible and mobile-responsive as standard. The ABASK site is not headless but uses bespoke themes customised by BAO.
As ABASK moves into its next phase of growth, we are introducing an in-house Web Developer alongside BAO. This is a hybrid model: BAO continues to play a key role on the development process, QA and release management, working alongside the in-house Web Developer who will take ownership of day-to-day site development driving faster-turnaround UX improvements.
This is a standalone role – there is no in-house front-end team today – so it suits someone who is confident working independently, comfortable defining their own day-to-day priorities, and skilled at collaborating with an external agency rather than only with in-house engineers. Given the pace of change at ABASK as a high-growth, luxury business, the ability to move quickly without compromising on quality is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Own day-to-day front-end and theme-level development on our Shopify Plus store, working within the existing house coding standards (lightweight, performant, accessible, future-proofed) established and maintained by our development agency, BAO.
- Build and ship UX improvements ranging from small, fast-turnaround changes (landing pages, merchandising updates, campaign builds, CRO tweaks) through to larger initiatives such as PDP and collection page redesigns.
- Partner closely with the Product Director and Design Director to translate briefs, wireframes and design concepts into high-quality, on-brand front-end builds that reflect ABASK's luxury positioning.
- Work within Shopify's Online Store 2.0 architecture – sections, blocks, metafields and theme app extensions – to deliver flexible, merchandiser-friendly page building without compromising performance.
- Maintain and enhance custom Liquid templates, JavaScript components and CSS in line with BAO's house coding style, so day-to-day changes stay consistent with the wider codebase.
- Monitor and optimise site performance, Core Web Vitals, accessibility (WCAG) and mobile responsiveness on an ongoing basis, flagging and fixing regressions as they arise.
- Act as the in-house point of contact for smaller, faster development requests – reducing turnaround time on day-to-day site changes that don't need to go through the full agency process.
- Scope and brief in larger pieces of work to BAO, providing clear technical requirements and acceptance criteria, and supporting them through development, QA and release.
- Support QA of both in-house and agency-delivered work prior to release, testing across devices and browsers to protect the quality of the customer experience.
- Keep across Shopify platform updates, new features and app ecosystem developments, recommending where they could benefit ABASK's site.
- Help maintain technical documentation for the site's theme, custom components and key integrations, so knowledge isn't held solely with the agency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day bugs and issues, escalating to BAO where a fix sits within their remit (e.g. underlying architecture, hosting, release management).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Candidate
Essential
- Proven experience as a web developer on Shopify or Shopify Plus, ideally including theme customisation, Online Store 2.0 (sections, blocks, metafields) and Liquid templating.
- Strong front-end fundamentals: HTML5, CSS/SCSS, and modern JavaScript, with the ability to write clean, maintainable code to an existing house style rather than only your own conventions.
- A solid eye for detail and craft – comfortable translating Figma/design files into pixel-accurate, on-brand builds, which is essential in a luxury retail environment.
- Working understanding of site performance optimisation, Core Web Vitals, SEO fundamentals, accessibility standards (WCAG) and responsive/mobile-first design.
- Experience using Shopify APIs (Storefront/Admin) and integrating third-party apps or services into a live storefront.
- Comfortable working at pace and re-prioritising across multiple small and large pieces of work simultaneously – this is a fast-paced, high-growth business.
- Confident communicator, able to work directly with non-technical stakeholders (Product Director, Design Director, wider team) as well as an external development agency.
- Experience using version control (e.g. Git) and following a structured release process.
- Experience working in a hybrid in-house/agency development model, understanding where an in-house role adds value alongside an agency's development, QA and release management.

Desirable
- Familiarity with Shopify Plus-specific features (Shopify Functions, checkout customisation, B2B, multi-currency/markets).
- Experience with React, Node.js or Shopify's Hydrogen/Remix framework.
- Prior experience in luxury, premium or design-led retail, where customer experience and visual craft are a priority.
- Understanding of analytics/CRO tooling (GA4, Microsoft Clarity, testing tools) to help inform UX decisions.
- Basic knowledge of app development or backend scripting to support light custom app or automation work.
You are
- A self-starter who is comfortable owning a standalone technical role, without a large in-house engineering team around them day-to-day.
- Collaborative and diplomatic – able to work effectively alongside an external agency without friction, being clear on scope and respectful of where responsibilities sit.
- Proactive about spotting opportunities to improve the site, rather than waiting to be briefed.
- Genuinely motivated by delivering an exceptional, luxury-standard customer experience.
- Organised, with good judgement on when a change is quick enough to build directly versus when it should be scoped and handed to BAO.
