Summary

INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY

Are you great with visitors, staff and volunteers, and a keen problem-solver? If you are, then we’re looking for a Welcome Manager for Aira Force and Acorn Bank, two stunning National Trust places to the East of the Lake District and Eden Valley. Internally, you'll be known as a 'Welcome Manager (Band 1)'.

  • Salary: £27,612 per annum
  • Contract Duration: This is a fixed-term contract due to end when the postholder returns to the role. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to last beyond 21st October 2027.
  • Working Pattern: You will work 1950 hours per year. This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. Typically, you will work between 9am and 5pm, including regular weekend and school holiday shifts. Flexibility will be required to meet business needs, so you may work additional hours during the busier Summer months, offset by reduced hours during quieter periods in the Winter.
  • Proposed Start Date: Monday 28th September 2026
  • Interviews: Will take place in person on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd September at Wray, Ambleside, LA22 0JA. You will only need to attend one of these days.

If you would like to apply, please submit a CV and Covering Letter, detailing how you meet the criteria listed in the 'Who we're looking for' section below. Don’t be put off if you don’t meet everything we are looking for; you will be part of a supportive and experienced team who will be able to help you get up to speed. If you have any questions, or would like an informal chat about the role, please contact Amy Pitch, Visitor Operations & Experience Manager: amy.pitch@nationaltrust.org.uk.

We are also advertising for a second full-time cover role, IRC178854 - Welcome Manager at Wray and Tarn Hows. If applying for both positions, please mention this in your cover letter. Applications for each role must be submitted separately via NT Jobs, but you can use the same CV and cover letter for both.

What It's Like To Work Here

You’ll be part of the Lakes and Eden Property Group, bringing together the National Trust’s built and designed heritage in some of the nation's most loved Lake District landscapes and places. From the sublime designed landscapes of Aira Force and Tarn Hows to the homes of some of the most important people in history, including Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop and the former home of Wordsworth and Canon Rawnsley at Allan Bank in Grasmere.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Be Doing

You’ll be the operational lead at Aira Force, accountable for day-to-day management, including duty management and visitor operations. As agreed locally, you’ll carry out and coordinate duty management at Aira Force, while also providing duty management cover for Acorn Bank one day per week as part of a rota.

Alongside your team, you’ll be expected to spend some of your time visitor-facing, not just when cover is needed. You’ll contribute to creating a positive, inclusive and collaborative work environment focused on delivering the Trust’s strategy. A hands-on approach is essential, with a willingness to get stuck in wherever needed to ensure the smooth running of the site.

  • Line managing the Welcome & Service Team Members, you’ll provide support to them and their teams, championing training and personal development.
  • You'll also work closely with cross-departmental colleagues, and lead staff and volunteers to deliver excellent visitor service, presentation standards and conservation standards.
  • In partnership with the Site Manager and Facilities team, you will liaise with contractors as required.

Responsibility for key performance indicators (KPIs) across membership recruitment, fundraising, visitor experience and staff satisfaction sits with this role. We want as many people as possible to join the National Trust, so membership recruitment will be a particular focus.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
