Welder Fabricator – Steel & Aluminium
Are you an experienced welder or fabricator looking to use your skills for something completely different?
You may currently work in manufacturing, engineering, general fabrication, sheet metalwork or another industry entirely and have never considered working with classic cars.
We are looking for a skilled Welder Fabricator to join Aston Workshop, working on the restoration and rebuilding of classic Aston Martin vehicles.
Previous experience in the classic car or automotive industry is not essential.
If you are confident working with steel and aluminium, can weld and fabricate accurately, and take pride in making things properly, you may already have many of the fundamental skills we need.
We can teach you the specialist automotive, panel work and traditional coachbuilding skills required to take those abilities in a completely new direction.
The Role
This isn't repetitive production welding or fabrication. Every vehicle and every job is different.
You will use your existing skills while gradually developing new ones, including:
- MIG and TIG welding of steel and aluminium
- Fabricating repair sections, brackets and structural components
- Repairing and restoring steel and aluminium bodywork
- Cutting, forming, fitting and finishing fabricated components
- Learning to manufacture complete body panels and repair sections
- Developing traditional metal-shaping techniques, including hand forming, wheeling and shrinking/stretching
- Achieving accurate fit, alignment and panel gaps
- Working alongside experienced restoration technicians, painters, engineers and vehicle technicians
What matters is having good practical welding and fabrication skills, an eye for detail, and the willingness to learn.

Take Your Skills in a Different Direction
Many of the practical skills used in specialist vehicle restoration are transferable from other areas of welding, fabrication and manufacturing.
Instead of repeatedly manufacturing the same components, you could be repairing an aluminium body panel, fabricating a structural section, recreating a component that hasn't been manufactured for decades, or learning how to shape a complete body panel by hand.
Over time, you'll have the opportunity to develop specialist coachbuilding skills and see your own work become part of a completed car.
What We're Looking For
We are much more interested in what you can do than which industry you currently work in.
Ideally, you will have:
- Good hands-on welding and fabrication experience
- Experience welding steel and/or aluminium
- TIG and/or MIG welding experience
- The ability to fabricate accurately from measurements, drawings or existing components
- Good general metalworking skills
- An eye for detail and quality
- A methodical approach to your work
- Pride in producing work to a high standard
- A willingness to learn new techniques and develop your abilities
Useful, But Not Essential
Experience in any of the following would be an advantage, but is not required:
- Automotive bodywork
- Classic vehicle restoration
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Panel beating
- Coachbuilding
- Metal shaping
- English wheel and shrinking/stretching equipment
- Lead loading and traditional finishing techniques

Training & Development
For the right person, we will provide the opportunity to turn existing welding and fabrication experience into specialist restoration and coachbuilding skills.
Working alongside experienced members of our team, you will gain exposure to:
- Traditional aluminium and steel body construction
- Hand-built body panels
- Full bare-metal restorations
- Complete vehicle rebuilds
- Rare and historically significant Aston Martin vehicles
- Specialist fabrication and coachbuilding techniques
There is significant scope to develop within the role as your skills and experience grow.
Working Environment
This is not a high-volume production environment.
Our emphasis is on craftsmanship, accuracy and producing work you can genuinely be proud of.
Many of the components you manufacture or repair will remain with these vehicles for decades. You will also have the opportunity to see your work progress from individual pieces of metal into a fully restored and completed car.
Working Hours & Salary
Working hours are Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, including two 15-minute paid tea breaks each day.
Paid overtime is available, along with flexible start and finish times to provide greater flexibility around the working day.
Salary is competitive and fully negotiable depending on experience and ability.
