Job Overview

This is a hands-on role. Around half of the day is spent in the welding bays supervising welders, carrying out first-off inspections and solving problems, with the rest given to technical reviews, WPS and WPQR control and audit support. The business values people who take ownership and has a strong record of promoting from within.

- Support and maintain compliance with ISO 3834-2 and DIN 2303
- Carry out welding technical reviews of customer drawings, specifications and standards as part of tender and contract review
- Identify WPS, WPQR, welder qualification, inspection, NDT, material and consumable requirements before work is accepted
- Develop, qualify and control WPS and WPQR documentation and run weld tests
- Maintain and monitor welder and welding operator qualifications
- Supervise welders directly on the shop floor, addressing technique, sequence and access issues
- Carry out first-off inspections with operators and support visual weld inspection
- Manage welding gases and check that stores consumables are correct
- Lead on welding non-conformances, investigations and corrective actions
- Support internal, customer and certification body audits
- Propose continuous improvement ideas and the investment needed to deliver them

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
