About the role
Alpha Welding & Fabrication Ltd is a growing welding and fabrication business based in West Sussex. We undertake a wide variety of fabrication, welding, repair, installation and site-based projects for both commercial and private customers.
We are looking for an experienced Welding & Fabrication Manager / Operations Manager to join the business and take responsibility for a significant part of the day-to-day running of the company.
This is not a traditional office-based management position. We are looking for someone with a strong technical background in welding and fabrication who understands how jobs are actually built, how long they should take and what they should cost.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Director and will have the opportunity to become a key member of the management team as the business continues to grow.
The role will include:
- Assessing new enquiries and understanding customer requirements
- Visiting sites where required to assess work
- Preparing accurate quotations and estimates
- Pricing labour, materials, plant, consumables and subcontractors
- Producing job sheets and organising work from quotation through to completion
- Planning and scheduling workshop and site work
- Managing and coordinating welders and fabricators
- Monitoring job progress, quality, timescales and profitability
- Ordering materials and liaising with suppliers
- Liaising directly with customers and resolving issues
- Reviewing drawings and specifications
- Providing technical guidance to the workshop and site teams
- Ensuring work is completed safely and to the required standard
- Helping develop efficient systems and processes within the business
- Assisting with recruitment and management of workshop staff
- Supporting the Director with the overall running and development of the company

About you
We are looking for someone who has substantial practical experience in welding and fabrication and has progressed into a supervisory, estimating, project management or management position.
You should be confident working across a broad range of welding and fabrication work and be able to look at a job and quickly understand:
- What needs to be done → how it should be done → what materials are required → how long it should take → what it should cost.
You will need:
- Extensive welding and fabrication experience
- Strong knowledge of fabrication methods and materials
- The ability to read and understand engineering drawings
- Experience estimating and quoting work
- Experience supervising or managing other people
- Strong organisational and planning skills
- Good commercial awareness
- Excellent communication skills
- The confidence to deal directly with customers and suppliers
- The ability to work independently and make decisions
- A practical, hands-on approach
- A high standard of workmanship and attention to detail
The ideal candidate
The ideal candidate may currently be working as a:
- Welding/Fabrication Manager
- Workshop Manager
- Fabrication Manager
- Welding Supervisor
- Fabrication Supervisor
- Senior Fabricator
- Welding/Fabrication Estimator
- Contracts or Project Manager within the fabrication industry

Location
West Sussex
The role will be predominantly based around our workshop, with occasional travel to customer sites throughout Sussex, Surrey and the surrounding areas.
