Job Opportunity: Welfare Rights & Debt Advice Officer
This role focuses on supporting people with mental health difficulties who are experiencing financial challenges. The successful candidate will provide welfare rights advice, debt advice, budgeting support, grant application assistance, and financial capability guidance, helping clients improve their financial wellbeing alongside their mental health.

Mind in Salford is an independent, user-focused charity providing vital services that improve the wellbeing and mental health of local people. We represent the voice of Salford in challenging stigma and influencing political, social and cultural change around mental health.
This role offers the opportunity to make a direct and practical difference to people in Salford who are experiencing financial difficulty, welfare rights challenges, and mental health needs.
We provide face-to-face training to strengthen your knowledge of mental health, alongside access to a learning platform with a wide range of courses across different subject areas.
The role offers flexible working, agreed in line with service needs. Benefits include generous annual leave entitlement, including three days leave over Christmas, an additional day of annual leave for your birthday, and access to three hours of wellbeing time each month.

Job Summary
Deliver high-quality welfare rights advice, debt advice, budgeting support, grant applications, and financial capability support to people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Client advice and casework: Provide welfare rights advice, debt advice, grant applications, information, and support through appointments, telephone support, drop-ins, and community-based settings.
- Quality and compliance: Maintain accurate case records, work within agreed case-working standards, meet monitoring requirements, and keep knowledge of welfare rights policy, systems, and legislation up to date.
- Partnership and team working: Work collaboratively with colleagues and external professionals to provide joined-up support for clients across different service settings.
- Service development: Contribute to service planning, improvement activity, and wider organisational learning based on client needs and service evidence.
- Team cover and flexibility: Provide appropriate cover where needed and undertake other reasonable duties in line with the role.
General Duties
- Attend and contribute to relevant meetings, including providing reports or presentations when required.
- Comply with and promote Mind in Salford’s policies and procedures, including equal opportunities, equality, and diversity.
- Participate constructively in training, supervision, staff meetings, and organisational development activity.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team across all aspects of the role.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- At least one year’s experience delivering welfare rights advice in a relevant setting.
- At least one year’s experience delivering debt advice in a relevant setting.
- Ability to understand the wishes and needs of people using mental health services and advocate appropriately on their behalf.
- Ability to prioritise and manage a caseload while meeting agreed case-working standards, targets, and service goals.
- Ability to maintain accurate and comprehensive records on a client management database.
- Ability to produce concise, accurate written and verbal communication, including reports when required.
- Ability to engage effectively with vulnerable adults and build positive working relationships with professionals across disciplines.
- Good negotiation, problem-solving, and organisational skills.

Desirable Criteria
- Certificate of Money Advice Practice qualification.
- Interest in mental health law, mental health services, and the wider policy context affecting service users.
- Interest in contributing to service user participation, organisational learning, and service development.
