Application Deadline: 14 September 2026

Department: Student Wellbeing Services

Employment Type: Fixed Term - Full Time

Location: Bath, Somerset - Newton Park

Compensation: Grade 7 - Starting from £38,784 rising to £43,482 per annum

Description

We are currently seeking a Wellbeing Service Manager who will report to and work closely with the Head of Student Success. The Wellbeing Service Manager is a key role within Student Wellbeing Services, leading and managing the operational delivery and day-to-day management of the Wellbeing Service.

(This is a 12-month, Fixed term Contract)

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, monitor and review the work of the Wellbeing Service, providing day-to-day line management and expertise to the SWS Advisors and Wellbeing Facilitators, to ensure delivery of high-quality student-centred services.
  • Lead and manage a professional Wellbeing Service which delivers support to, and facilitates activities for, students, including specialist advice in the areas of money and student finance, coordinating support for specific groups of students (including, among others, care experienced students, estranged students, Foyer leavers, and young adult carers), and providing generalist, non-clinical advice and support to students experiencing lower-level emotional distress (for example, associated with relationship issues, loneliness/isolation, homesickness or worry about exams), bullying, harassment, or drugs and alcohol-related issues.
  • Ensure that student and general enquiries are efficiently and effectively responded to by SWS and the Wellbeing Service, acting as a point of escalation for particularly complex and challenging interactions, using tact and diplomacy to manage conflict where necessary.
  • Be responsible for the effective and consistent delivery of the service, ensuring the provision of in the moment non-clinical advice and support to students, focused on providing real-time solutions, effective signposting, and appropriately identifying and escalating risk.
  • Work with the SWS Operations Coordinator to ensure the delivery of a programme of engaging, inclusive and proactive wellbeing-related activities for students that have a positive impact on the student experience.
  • Provide information, advice and support to students on a range of complex wellbeing and financial matters, leading with and managing student cases as appropriate, including the effective recording of robust case notes and actions.
  • Review, assign and where appropriate respond to student reports via the University’s Report & Support system, ensuring clear protocol and guidance for Wellbeing Service staff on responding appropriately.
  • Set and maintain the boundaries of the Wellbeing Service, as a non-clinical support service, enabling staff to feel confident in supporting students who are distressed in a boundaried and role-appropriate way.
  • Liaise with, maintain good working relationships with, and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of internal and external colleagues and stakeholders – including other professional services teams, student groups, academic teams, University contracted partners, and relevant statutory and voluntary sector agencies.
  • Process and manage sensitive and confidential student data in accordance with legal and other University-level and departmental data requirements, particularly those relating to data protection and freedom of information. This includes providing guidance to others on when information can and cannot be shared (for example, with a third-party organisation or students’ family members) and feeling confident in handling related conversations and knowing when to seek further advice.
  • Contribute to the development of Student Wellbeing Services service delivery standards and ensure that these are maintained by the Wellbeing Service, taking appropriate remedial action, and contributing to the continuous improvement of SWS, ensuring services remain fit for purpose and aligned with BSU vision and strategy.
  • Keep up to date with good practice, regulatory changes, and broader advances in matters related to student wellbeing support and funding. This includes contributing to the professional development of colleagues by sharing the knowledge acquired to ensure best practice across the team.
  • Be committed to personal and professional development, identifying and supporting training, enhancement and development opportunities for Wellbeing Service staff.
  • Further develop and maintain specialist knowledge and expertise relating to the key areas of focus of the Wellbeing service, providing direction, leadership and guidance to others as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other duties which are consistent with the scope or grade of the post.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
