The Role
We are looking for a qualified teacher with experience delivering Welsh at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level and Years 5 and 6 in the Prep School. The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate high standards of preparation, organisation and marking in the teaching of curious, well-motivated students in Welsh.
It is important that the candidate is prepared to accompany educational visits, including international and residential if required, and assist with support sessions and clubs. Enthusiasm and competence in the subject should be evidenced by a lively and engaging teaching style and active participation in the extra-curricular activities of the department.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience Should Include
- A well-qualified graduate with QTS or equivalent experience.
- Successful experience teaching Welsh at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level, with a track record of consistently enabling learners to achieve high standards.
- A proven track record of academic success in the subject area.
- Able to demonstrate excellent behaviour management skills and a commitment to creating a positive culture of student welfare, by taking an active role in pastoral care matters.
- A proactive and innovative approach to teaching, including knowledge of the latest developments within the profession.
- A supportive and inclusive approach regarding different cultures, backgrounds, abilities and personal choices.
About The Department
The Welsh Department is a well-established department within Languages comprising of one full-time member of staff and a part-time member of staff who currently teach students from Years 5 to Year 13. The department is accommodated in two teaching rooms in the Senior School. Students achieve outstanding results at GCSE, AS and A Level Welsh Second Language and progress to study a variety of subjects at universities such as Oxford, Durham, Queen’s University, Belfast, Central School of Speech and Drama, Cardiff University. All students study Welsh in Year 7 along with French and Spanish and it is studied as a language option in Years 8 and 9 with French, Spanish and Latin. At GCSE, Cymraeg Craidd and Cymraeg Estynedig are offered as options also and the teaching groups are smaller. We offer Welsh 2nd Language AS and A level and AS and A level First Language as required. Some students from Welsh medium primary schools join the Senior School annually and the College in Year 12. The department plays an integral role in supporting these students by assisting them with the transition from Welsh to English medium language teaching.

We also have members of staff in other departments who are Welsh speaking and support the department in promoting the Welsh ethos in the school.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s extra-curricular activities such as day trips, residential trips to Llangrannog and Glan-llyn as well as the Bore Coffi Cymraeg, the school’s annual Eisteddfod as well as the Urdd Eisteddfod. As a department we are passionate about promoting the Welsh ethos within the school and being part of the national plan to have a million Welsh speakers by 2050.
About The School
Howell’s School, Llandaff, is one of the oldest girls’ school in Wales, having opened in August 1860. Since then, it has steadily expanded, both in terms of student numbers and physical size. The school now caters for girls from the age of 3 to 16 and girls and boys 16-18. Since 1980 it has been a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the largest organisation of independent schools in the UK. Its 25 member schools all have a reputation for consistently high academic standards, superb pastoral support and enviable co-curricular programmes.
