Most of the world will hand you an answer without you even having to ask, and it usually sounds something like this. You're worth something if you're attractive enough, successful enough, productive enough, or wealthy enough. The problem with that answer is that it turns your value into a moving target, something that goes up on a good day and quietly drops on a bad one, which means you end up spending your whole life chasing a number that never stays still long enough to actually catch.
Scripture answers the question in a completely different way, and honestly, it's a relief once it sinks in. Your worth was never tied to any of that. It comes down to one thing: you're a spirit, made in the image of God.
That's really the whole basis for it. Not your résumé, not your body, not what you've managed to build or accomplish, and not how many people happen to admire you at the moment. Just this one fact, that you carry God's image, and that alone gives you a worth that nothing else can add to and nothing else can take away.
This isn't just a comforting thought to put on a mug. It's the foundation for why human life is treated as sacred throughout Scripture. When someone harms another person, degrades them, or strips away their dignity, that's not simply a social wrong or a violation of some cultural rule we all agreed on. It's an attack on something God Himself placed inside that person, something He put there on purpose.

That's part of why murder carries such weight in the Bible. It was never treated as just another broken rule among many, but as the destruction of someone who bears the very image of God. It's the same reason racism, oppression, and every form of dehumanisation are so serious, not only because of the damage they cause, but because they deny a dignity that was never ours to take away in the first place. That dignity came from God, and it was given to every single person, without exception, no fine print attached.
It helps to sit with what that actually looks like in real life. The person you completely disagree with politically still carries God's image. The stranger you walked past today without a second thought still carries it. The person everyone else has written off, the one who's struggling, the one who's made a genuine mess of their life, still carries it too. None of their circumstances, none of their choices, and none of their failures ever erases that.
And if you're honest, the same is true for you.
That's worth sitting with for a moment, especially if you've spent years measuring your own worth by your worst moments, by how your body looks, or by everything you feel like you still haven't accomplished. None of that was ever the real basis for your value to begin with. You were never meant to earn it in the first place. You were simply given it, the moment God formed you and breathed His own life into you.
So here's something worth carrying with you this week. Are you actually treating your own life, and the lives of the people around you, like they carry that kind of weight? Not just as something you agree with in theory, but in the way you actually speak to people, the way you think about them when they're not in the room, and especially in how you treat the people who are hardest to love.
