Job Description

Fitter (Winder)

The Role

To work as part of the Surface maintenance team to ensure all machinery and equipment performs in a safe and effective manner through the diligent execution of maintenance inspections and remedial work derived from such inspections or operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Following all relevant rules and procedures
  • Attending Tool box talks delivered by Foreman/Engineers
  • Carrying out risk assessments and implementing method statements where required
  • Ensuring risk assessments and method statements are suitable and used for tasks being undertaken
  • Ensuring that they are signed on to a Permit to Work or Clearance to Work before beginning any task that requires one to be issued
  • Mechanical isolations (as detailed in the isolation procedure) when authorised
  • Understanding and following emergency procedures
  • Completing PPM work orders and shift reports.

Planning

  • Attending and contributing to daily pre-shift meetings, led by Foremen/Chargehands.
  • Gaining information from previous inspection reports and from discussion with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Planning, risk assessing and executing workload as necessary.

Decision Making and Problem Solving

  • Make informed decisions associated with hazard identification and risk management to ensure safe working
  • Prioritise tasks after discussion with supervisor to ensure maintenance objectives are achieved
  • Using judgement and experience to manage incidents and problems

Operational Parameters

  • Carry out remedial or preventative work according to priorities agreed with colleagues and supervision
  • Be a reliable member of the shaft call out service, providing on call support to the Mine on a set rota.
  • Provide effective feedback to team members and supervision in order to maximise the effectiveness of engineering input
  • Offer suggestions for improvements, wherever necessary in terms of equipment safety, performance, tooling, design and working practices
  • Be an effective team member with the ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of the team. To use knowledge and experience to the benefit of the group and to be approachable and forthcoming with ideas
  • Demonstrate an interest in personal development and to participate effectively in training sessions as and when required
  • Be self-motivated, disciplined and focussed

Communication

  • Providing clear and concise reports of work carried out and work required
  • Reporting to Foremen on all aspects of their activities
  • Liaising with other ICL Boulby engineering and operational staff, as well as contractors on joint activities
  • Liaising with supervisors in order to understand all aspects of the daily maintenance activity

Information Management

  • Interpreting and acting upon information given by way of oral/written communication, technical manuals, method statements and risk assessments and previous work reports
  • Utilising all such information for the effective implementation of the maintenance workload
  • Using standard IT packages to support work

About You

  • Time-served tradesman with experience in the maintenance of a mine or similar complex
  • Understanding of process and distribution engineering
  • Familiarity with condition monitoring techniques would be advantageous
  • Time Served apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline
  • NVQ Level 3 in a mechanical engineering desirable
