About The Modest Merchant
Based in Hackney, The Modest Merchant is a young and fast-growing wine importer, wholesaler, and retailer with a clear sense of purpose: To champion modern, low-intervention wines from some of Europe’s most exciting small producers. We work directly with the growers, building genuine relationships and bringing characterful, expressive wines to both the on and off trade. As the business continues to expand, we’re shaping the foundations for what comes next and looking for someone who wants to be part of that journey.
The Role
This is a hands-on role at the heart of the business. As Administrative Assistant, you will keep sales, imports, and day-to-day operations running smoothly, processing orders, maintaining inventory, coordinating deliveries, and managing sample requests. You will also support marketing activities, including social media and website content, and will assist with customer events and tastings. You will report to the Operations Manager and work closely with the Finance team and Managing Director.
This is a fantastic opportunity to grow your career in a supportive, collaborative, and wine-focused environment, with scope to get involved in creative projects, in-person events, and shaping how we present our wines.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
