Summary
Ringway (NH East) is seeking reliable and qualified Winter Casual HGV Drivers to support the delivery of winter maintenance services on behalf of National Highways. The role involves operating specialist gritting and snow-plough vehicles to help maintain the safety and availability of the Strategic Road Network during periods of adverse winter weather.
The position is offered on a zero-hours contract throughout the winter season, with work allocated through a rota system. Drivers will be required to participate in an on-call standby arrangement and be available to respond to operational call-outs at short notice when winter weather conditions require treatment of the network.
This is a safety-critical role requiring a professional approach, strong commitment to safe working practices, and the ability to operate effectively in challenging weather conditions.
Desirable Skills
- Previous experience driving Large Goods Vehicles (LGV/HGV) in a professional environment.
- Experience of winter maintenance operations, highways maintenance, construction, infrastructure, utilities, or similar operational sectors.
- Knowledge of vehicle inspections, defect reporting, and safe operating procedures.
- Experience working within safety-critical environments and adhering to prescribed operating standards.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, bank holidays, and emergency call-outs.
- Good geographical knowledge of the local and strategic road network would be advantageous.

Specialist Skills
- Valid HGV Class C Licence.
- Current Driver CPC Qualification.
- City & Guilds Winter Service Operations Accreditation, including Units 615 and 680.
- Understanding of winter maintenance activities, spreading operations, and safe operation of gritting and snow-plough equipment.
General Competencies

- Ability to work independently and follow operational instructions accurately.
