Job Description
Winter Service Gritter Driver – Norse Highways
Norfolk Area
A minimum of £14.36 per hour
Casual Employment basis
Are you a HGV C Licence holder and looking for casual work? Want to be part of a professional team delivering an essential service to Residents and Road Users in Norfolk?
Norse Highways are seeking qualified drivers to join our gritting teams across Norfolk to help us maintain safe passage for road users throughout the winter months when road temperatures are low. Casual Winter Drivers required from October – April. Hours are weather dependant however, majority of gritting takes place throughout evenings and weekends, before 07:30am and after 16:00pm.
What We Can Offer
- £15.25 per hour (daytime, Monday - Friday)
- £22.87 per hour (before 07:30am and after 16:00pm, after 15:00pm on Fridays)
- £30.50 per hour (Sundays and Bank Holidays) + £115 weekly retainer.
- Standby payment throughout the 26-week season (applicable to drivers allocated a specific route or covering a specific route for a given week).

Candidate Requirements
- You will have previous experience working as a driver with a HGV C Licence, CPC Qualification alongside: City & Guilds Winter Service Operation Certificate or be prepared to complete training funded by Norse Highways (you will be required to undertake training which covers all aspects of Health & Safety in winter operations, alongside training in a gritter vehicle followed by a driving assessment).
- Previous experience operating relevant plant and machinery.
- Confident in carrying out vehicle checks prior to commencing day-to-day work.
- Available to respond and participate in gritting action throughout the winter season on an AM/PM shift pattern, working when weather conditions dictate.
- Ability to learn an allocated route (typically 3.5 hours long, inclusive of vehicle first use check and returning vehicle to depot).
- Professional attitude to work with a willingness to undertake winter working hours, complying to driving hours regulations.
