DE&S has recently been integrated into the National Armaments Director (NAD) Group. The NAD Group brings together key Ministry of Defence (MOD) organisations to unite expertise across science, technology, procurement, infrastructure, and support to provide integrated capabilities faster and more efficiently for our armed forces and our allies. This role requires you to have lived in the UK for the last 5 years and obtain Security Check (SC) security clearance. Clearance must be obtained without any caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role you’ve been recruited for. If it isn’t obtained, or is obtained but with caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role, any conditional offer made to you will be withdrawn. Obtaining SC security clearance can be a lengthy process, and we reserve the right to withdraw any conditional offer made if the necessary security clearance isn’t obtained within 12 months.

Job description

Are you seeking a great career opportunity? Join us at Defence Munitions (DM) Kineton as a Munitions Support Operative.

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will be working to tight timelines and with critical ammunition outputs. You will engage in tasks related to DM, including receipt, storage, conducting maintenance and repairs of ammunition, conducting detailed checks on Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE), and loading vehicles at the depot.

You will have opportunities to work on a range of associated documentation and IT Support, all to ensure that our Armed Forces are correctly supported and supplied in a timely and effective fashion.

You will be working on site and in our warehouses, adhering to safety guidelines and procedures to ensure the safe, effective, and consistent handling and storage of ammunition and explosives. You will be a proactive team player who can adapt to frequently changing, customer-focused environments.

We will provide you with guidance and training in explosives and non-explosives stores accounting and logistic systems. Working in various process buildings, you will find this role is full of variety and will give you opportunities to gain experience in DM, the intricacies of working with these items, and the ways in which we transport our goods around the world.

The work can be physically demanding and often outdoors, in challenging conditions, including poor weather.

This role is 100% site based at DM Kineton on a full time, 37 hours a week basis. The usual hours are 8:00 – 16:00 Monday to Thursday, 8:00 – 15:30 on Friday.

What you’ll be doing

  • Competent to National Occupational Standard (NOS) Ordnance Munitions Explosives (OME) Operator in the through life management of explosive and non-explosive inventory warehousing activities including road, rail and waterfront support.
  • Carry out all manual/mechanical operations in a safe and recognised manner to comply with local and departmental policy and procedures.
  • Maintain a high standard of security, cleanliness and housekeeping within the explosives storage and processing facilities to prevent theft, accidents or damage to munitions and explosives.
  • Move and handle munitions and explosives in a safe and efficient manner to comply with Safe Systems Of Work (SSOW) including Quality procedures, risk assessments, manual handling and COSHH, and the Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) Supervisor. Ensure compliance with current Safe Handling Instructions (SHIMs) and Safe Handling Equipment Procedures (SHEPs).
  • Conduct and record on check sheets that MHE pre and post use checks have been made to ensure only the correct, authorised and serviceable equipment is used and safe to operate in support of WOME activities.
  • Adopt a multi-skilled philosophy and approach in supporting wider depot operations and activities in accordance with local and departmental policy and procedures. Typically this may include activities such as General Munitions processing and Logistics/warehousing duties including the operation of MHE, supporting the assembly/disassembly of unit load specifications (ULS), environmental monitoring, performing the duties of a Dangerous Goods Consignor and/or Dangerous Goods Authorised Representative.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Have a basic knowledge of Warehousing and Storage (Lead Criterion)
  • Experience of Mechanical Handling Equipment
  • An understanding of Risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Proven understanding of manual handling principles
