About the Role
As a Wordings Specialist, you will be based within the Customer Oversight team, supporting the business by ensuring that policy wordings and contractual documentation are drafted, reviewed, negotiated and agreed to a consistently high standard. The role is accountable for ensuring that all wordings accurately reflect the intended insurance cover, align with the syndicates risk appetite, and are clear, fair and not misleading, in accordance with regulatory and legislative requirements. As well as supporting Underwriters and brokers, you will also work directly with clients to ensure that policy documentation represents the cover agreed and clearly articulates the scope of insured risks.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing, negotiating and agreeing policy wordings and contractual documentation in a timely manner, maintaining expert knowledge of insurance contracts and London Market practice.
- Drafting and reviewing policy wordings, clauses, summaries of cover and application forms to ensure clarity, consistency and compliance with legal, regulatory, reinsurance and internal governance requirements.
- Ensuring that policy documentation is unambiguous and does not provide broader cover than intended or agreed.
- Working closely with Underwriting teams and third parties to agree, sign off and implement new or amended wordings and policy documentation.
- Acting as a specialist referral point and coach for wordings-related matters, enabling underwriting teams through guidance, constructive challenge and the sharing of technical expertise.
- Proactively identifying potential contractual, wording or market issues and implementing practical, commercially viable solutions at an early stage.
- Managing the progress and ownership of wording negotiations, including maintaining accountability for wordings returned to brokers until final agreement is reached.
- Liaising with underwriters and claims teams on technical wording issues to support effective underwriting decisions and claims outcomes.
- Contributing to product development activity through market research, insight and analysis of emerging trends and practices.
- Ensuring documentation meets Lloyd’s requirements and reflects market best practice, underwriting standards and internal controls.
- Supporting regulatory compliance activities, including thematic reviews, regulatory queries and returns, with a focus on fair customer outcomes and commerciality.
- Maintaining and developing internal wordings resources, repositories and guidance materials.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
