We recommend that anyone who is thinking of working in healthcare should complete a short period of work experience before applying to any university, apprenticeship, or career within our Trust.

Our Trust has partnered up with the local community to provide work experience and opportunities to young people and those looking for a career change.
We recommend that anyone who is thinking of working in healthcare should complete a short period of work experience before applying to any university, apprenticeship, or career within our Trust.
The Trust's work experience programme which has been paused since March 2025, will relaunch in early 2026. We are not taking any requests for work placements until the relaunch and will share more information in due course when the programme is live again.
This does not refer to undergraduate or postgraduate students who have placements managed by the Practice Learning Support Unit, as part of their professional training course requirements. HOSPEX placements will not be impacted by this pause. Existing and allocated work experience placements will continue as planned.
Why is this happening?
Since 2022, the Trust has welcomed over 2500 students to learn what working at UHDB is like. Over this time, we have seen a considerable increase in applications and feedback shows we now require a more streamlined process to help provide the best work experience service across the Trust. Due to this, we need to temporarily place a hold on accepting new applications so we can develop, test, and implement our new approach by the new year.
Part of this approach will be the introduction of a new online system called LeapHub to assist us with managing the demand for placements. This comprehensive portal will encompass the entire end-to-end journey, allowing applicants to browse and filter available placements, complete applications, and stay in contact with their placement supervisor.

The Medical Education department organises a Hospital Experience Programme (HOSPEX) for Year 12/13 and postgraduate students who are considering medicine as a career.
The HOSPEX course is an opportunity to observe NHS doctors and surgeons in a variety of clinical environments, including theatres, clinics and wards, and will also include talks delivered by medical students and resident doctors. We have HOSPEX programmes at both Royal Derby Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton.
Please note the HOSPEX programme is the Trust's only approved route for access to medical work experience within our hospitals and we would ask individuals not to make separate or direct approaches to departments or clinicians.
