Job Description
Role Overview
We are looking for individuals studying a RICS accredited degree aligned with the RICS' Valuation or Commercial pathway, with an agreed work-based placement (sandwich) year (full eligibility details are set out below). The placement will start in September 2027 and lasts for 12 months. There may also be opportunities to continue working at the VO, in a property-related role, on a part-time basis for an additional 12 months when you return to university.
The Valuation Office (VO) offers a dynamic and fast-paced working environment where no two days are the same. You will be trusted to contribute to real business activities, working alongside experienced Chartered Surveyors on projects and casework that have a direct impact on public services and the property sector. As part of your placement, you will learn how to balance competing priorities, manage workloads effectively and make informed decisions using evidence and professional judgement. You will also have opportunities to build strong professional networks.
From an early stage in your placement, you will be given responsibility for managing your own caseload, providing valuable hands-on experience in real valuation work. This practical exposure will help you develop key professional skills and build evidence that may contribute towards the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) on the Valuation and Valuation-Related pathways.
You can find out more about our Work Placement Programme and how to apply by attending one of our live events prior to the closing date click here to view dates, times and sign up. Please note bookings will close at midday the day before each event. Your link will be sent by 9:30am on the day of the event. Please check your spam or junk folder before contacting us.

- Engage with customers and agents to discuss and review valuation cases, assess relevant information, and contribute to case resolutions, including re-assessment as needed.
- Effectively manage your own caseload whilst collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver work promptly within agreed timescales, helping to deliver business objectives and customer outcomes.
- Keep up to date with market knowledge and trends in order to support valuation decision-making.
- Record 12 months experience and Continuous Professional Development to count towards the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
