About The Role
Are you passionate about health, safety, and wellbeing?
We're looking for a Workforce Health, Safety & Environment Advisor to support our East Coast Route teams in creating a safe, healthy, and high-performing workplace.
In this role, you'll provide expert advice and practical support to our Maintenance, Operations, and Telecomms teams, helping managers identify and manage risk, improve safety performance, and embed a positive safety culture across the route.
You'll work closely with colleagues at all levels to support investigations, analyse safety data and trends, implement improvement initiatives, and drive behavioural and cultural change. You'll also play a key role in developing people, sharing best practice, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
We're looking for someone who is proactive, collaborative, and solution-focused, with strong communication skills and a passion for helping others. Whether coaching managers, supporting frontline teams, or influencing positive change, you'll have the confidence to build relationships and make a real impact.

This role is based primarily on site and involves a 35-hour working week. As we operate a 24/7 railway, you'll need to be flexible and able to support operational requirements, including night working where required.
What You'll Be Doing
- Providing expert health, safety, and environmental advice, coaching, and support to operational teams.
- Working with managers to promote a positive safety culture and drive continuous improvement.
- Monitoring and analysing safety data, identifying trends, and recommending practical solutions.
- Supporting accident and incident investigations and helping teams learn from events.
- Identifying health, safety, and environmental risks and helping implement effective control measures.
- Supporting the delivery of local and national safety, wellbeing, and environmental initiatives.
- Building strong relationships with colleagues, Trade Union Safety Representatives, and external partners.
- Coordinating audits, safety tours, and assurance activities to drive compliance and best practice.
- Supporting managers and frontline teams to develop their knowledge, capability, and confidence in health and safety.
- Helping ensure safe systems of work are implemented effectively across the route.
Your Experience And Skills
We're looking for people with bags of potential whose strengths include:
- A NEBOSH Certificate (or working towards a recognised health and safety qualification).
- Knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and compliance management processes.
- An understanding of operational environments, ideally within the railway industry.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify trends and recommend practical solutions.
- Experience supporting accident and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to coach, support, and develop others to improve safety performance.
- Strong organisational skills and a proactive, solution-focused approach.
- A passion for promoting health, safety, and wellbeing and driving positive culture change.

It Would Be Great If You Also Have
- A NEBOSH Diploma.
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
- An Institute of Environmental Management Award (IEMA) qualification.

- Salary: £35,582 - £43,400 (Band 4B), depending on skills, qualifications, and experience
