Role Description
The Workshop Controller role at Thompsons is a full-time, on-site position based in Sheffield. The role is responsible for managing the daily operations of the workshop, including planning and allocating work to technicians, monitoring job progress, and ensuring that all repairs and maintenance are completed efficiently and safely. The Workshop Controller coordinates vehicle bookings, prioritizes urgent jobs, and liaises with the service desk, parts department, and customers to provide accurate updates on vehicle status and timelines. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing job cards, checking technical information, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring compliance with manufacturer and company procedures. The role also involves supporting the workshop team, resolving operational issues, and helping to maintain a clean, organized, and productive working environment.

- Strong workshop management and coordination skills, with experience organizing workloads and monitoring technician performance.
- Technical understanding of commercial vehicles, trucks, and trailers, including basic diagnostic and maintenance knowledge.
- Ability to use service management systems and scheduling tools, with solid IT literacy for reporting and documentation.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with drivers, customers, and internal teams.
- Proven focus on safety, quality control, and compliance with manufacturer standards and regulatory requirements.
- Previous experience in a workshop controller, service advisor, or similar role within commercial vehicles or automotive is highly beneficial.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Relevant vocational or technical qualifications in automotive or commercial vehicle maintenance are advantageous.
- Full UK driving licence, ideally including entitlement to drive commercial vehicles.
