Salary: £32,597.00 – £34,434.00
Location: Base location is Transport Engineering Workshops (TEW) in Perry Barr, Birmingham, B42 2TX.
Working hours: 37 hour week, consisting of a core shift:
- Monday to Thursday 8am-4pm
- Friday 8am-3.30pm.
You will be entitled to 29 days’ annual leave, rising to 34 days after five years. You will also receive a further eight days’ Bank Holiday entitlement.

The Role and Department
Our Transport Engineering Workshops are based in Perry Barr, Birmingham, from where mechanical and engineering support services are provided to all our fire stations across the West Midlands. TEW’s primary responsibilities are the design, purchase, maintenance and repair of the service’s fleet of 136 emergency response vehicles and 144 support vehicles, as well as the associated equipment required by a fire and rescue service, such as ladders, plant, and rescue equipment totalling over 2,000 assets.
The team of vehicle technicians also provide a 24-hour emergency call out service for our breakdowns and urgent repairs, to ensure the continued availability of frontline fire appliances and equipment in responding to emergency incidents.
Job Purpose
We are looking to appoint a Workshop Equipment Technician. Under the direction of the Workshop Supervisor, they will be responsible for carrying out maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a range of operational equipment, ensuring all work is performed to WMFS, manufacturers’ and safety standards, contributing to efficient workshop operations and minimising equipment downtime.

- Inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of a wide range of complex operational equipment, including hydraulically-powered rescue equipment, light portable pumps, positive pressure ventilation fans, lighting and torches, etc.
- Ensure all work is carried out to the required standard, as stipulated by the Workshop Manager with reference to Loler, PuWER and all associated British and European standards, NFCC best practice guidelines and WMFS policy and procedures.
- Complete and process all documentation in relation to the servicing and repairs of operational equipment, to comply with legislation as prescribed by the Workshop Supervisor using Fleet Management systems (mytech app) and suppliers’ web-based portals (e.g. Holmatro).
Essential Skills or Experience
- 4 GCSE passes - Grade A*-C /9-4, including English and Mathematics or equivalent Level 2 qualification (including L2 functional skills), or higher-level relevant qualification.
- Full valid driving licence (Category B)
- Experience of undertaking practical tasks such as the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of a wide range of operational equipment, ensuring all work is carried out to the required standard.
Desirable Skills or Experience
- Trade qualifications, City & Guilds or NVQ equivalents, recognised technician qualification in maintaining equipment
- Full valid driving licence (Category C)
- Vehicle electrics level 2
