Workshop Manager

We are looking for someone to take a proactive role in leading the team and supporting the Workshop Controller in running the workshop, which is responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and mechanical and electrical repair of returning hire equipment. We have a friendly environment where the rapid growth of our business means we support the development of our talented people.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading, training, and developing the workshop team day to day, including running one-to-ones, with support from the Workshop Controller and Workshop Manager on team development and performance
  • Keeping the section resourced, including approving holidays and checking staff are booked on and present
  • Reviewing stock availability daily, setting and briefing the team on the day's inspection and repair priorities, and checking priority items are being worked
  • Inspecting and testing returning hire equipment, including PAT testing and calibration, and making sure the team works to the same standard and records it correctly (training given)
  • Diagnosing and repairing faults on a very large range of mechanical and electrical tools and equipment, balancing your own hands-on work with allocating work across the team
  • Acting as the team's go-to for technical problems, and working with other THX departments on breakdowns and department-specific enquiries
  • Deciding which repairs are carried out in-house and which are sent to third-party suppliers
  • Using a computer-based system for administration and planning, including keeping the operations board up to date
  • Upholding health and safety, PPE, branding, and housekeeping standards across the workshop, yard, and warehouse areas
  • Working with the Workshop Controller to structure and grow the workshop, recording performance, and helping the team achieve their targets
  • Making sure the section is ready at the end of each day, with everything due to ship gone and the team set up for the next morning

Monday to Friday working hours, overtime may sometimes be required to meet customer demand. Currently based in Bedford (MK41 0QB), but relocating in the new year to MK43 0YL.

Requirements

It is essential that you bring:

  • Previous experience in the maintenance and repair of a wide range of equipment and tools
  • Strong mechanical and electrical skills, with the technical knowledge to diagnose and fix faults
  • Supervisory experience, or the right attitude to guiding, instructing, and developing staff
  • The ability to work from technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications
  • Good computer and MS Office skills, with accurate paperwork and record-keeping
  • Excellent communication skills with staff, customers, and managers
  • Strong planning, organization, and time-management skills
  • A safety-conscious approach and a good eye for detail
  • A practical, can-do attitude with the ability to work quickly and methodically
  • The ability to work on your own initiative while being a genuine team player

It would be great if you also have:

  • A recognised mechanical or electrical qualification (e.g. NVQ, City & Guilds, or apprenticeship)
  • Experience of PAT testing or calibration
  • Experience working on electro-mechanical, hydraulic, or power tool equipment
  • Experience in the tool or plant hire industry
  • A full UK driving licence
