Job Introduction

Job Title: Workshop Technician

Starting Salary: £27,696 progressing to £31,022 per annum (pro rata for part time) - Pay award pending

Hours: 37

Location: Hertford

Contract Type: Permanent

Directorate: Community Protection

About The Team

This is an exciting opportunity to join Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s - Technical Services – Operational Support department.

Operational Support is a key area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue’s Technical Services department. They hold the responsibility for servicing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of firefighting and rescue equipment alongside breathing apparatus and ancillary equipment to enable front line crews to provide an effective operational response.

This is a rewarding role and an opportunity to be part of a prestigious public serving organisation renowned for excellence. If this sounds like an opportunity for you to serve our community we would love to hear from you!

About The Role

This is a fast-paced and often reactive environment, dependent on operational incidents, therefore you’ll need to be able to work under pressure, be able to work as part of a team, and be extremely well organised, taking a proactive approach to your workload.

Typically, you will be:

  • Ensuring that HFRS operational equipment is inspected & serviced at the correct intervals and is fit for operational use.
  • Using computerised systems for maintaining records of all equipment inspections, tracking, tracing, and managing of assets.
  • Servicing, maintaining, and repairing HFRS equipment both at Operational Support Workshop’s and other locations as necessary i.e. fire stations.
  • The movement, transport, and carrying of equipment, as required, within the area covered by HFRS.

Full training will be provided on our specialist equipment and systems; however, we are looking for candidates who already have a good understanding of workshop environments and practical repair work. A proactive approach, attention to detail, and a commitment to safe working practices are essential.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
