B.15 Modelmaking Workshop is part of the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED) at the University of Manchester and serves students from the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), a joint school between the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. The workshop provides facilities, guidance, and technical support for producing scale development and presentation models that support student architectural projects. It offers state-of-the-art digital fabrication technologies alongside core traditional manufacturing techniques, giving students a broad, industry-relevant skill set. The team is committed to continually developing the workshop to meet evolving industry standards while promoting both contemporary and traditional approaches to modelmaking. In addition to supporting MSA, B.15 undertakes consultancy work and contributes to architecture-related projects on campus and with external partners.

Role Description
The Workshop Technician (Modelmaking) is a full-time, on-site role based in the Manchester Area, United Kingdom. The role involves supporting students and staff in the safe and effective use of workshop equipment, including digital fabrication tools and traditional modelmaking machinery. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Preparing materials
- Maintaining tools and machines
- Demonstrating techniques
- Advising on modelmaking methods that align with project requirements
The technician will help manage workflow in the workshop, ensure compliance with health and safety procedures, and assist in organising inductions, demonstrations, and training sessions. The role also includes:
- Contributing to the development of workshop processes and facilities
- Supporting architecture-related projects and consultancy work
- Collaborating with academic and technical colleagues to improve the student learning experience
Qualifications
- Strong practical skills in architectural modelmaking, including experience with traditional fabrication techniques (e.g., hand tools, woodwork, plastics, finishing).
- Experience with digital fabrication technologies such as laser cutting, CNC routing, and 3D printing, and the ability to guide users in their application.
- Knowledge of relevant design and CAD software commonly used in architecture and modelmaking (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, or similar tools).
- Sound understanding of workshop health and safety standards, risk assessment, and safe operating procedures for machinery and equipment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse student cohorts, providing clear demonstrations, and offering constructive technical guidance.
- Strong organisational and time-management abilities to handle multiple projects, maintain equipment, and support workshop scheduling.
- Experience in an educational, architectural, or design workshop environment is highly beneficial.
- Relevant technical or vocational qualification in modelmaking, architecture, product design, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
