Teaching Assistant - Complex SEMH Support
Location: North Manchester
Start Date: October
Role: Long-term
Hours: 30 hours per week
Pay: Dependent on experience
Cover People are currently recruiting for an experienced Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support to a pupil with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within a mainstream primary school in North Manchester.
This is a rewarding long-term opportunity for someone who is confident supporting children with challenging behaviour, significant barriers to learning and communication needs, and who understands the importance of consistency, trust and strong relationships.
The Role
You will provide consistent day-to-day support to a pupil who requires a high level of supervision, redirection and encouragement to engage with learning.
The Role Will Involve
- Providing dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day
- Building a strong, trusting relationship with the pupil
- Supporting emotional regulation and engagement
- Using positive strategies to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour
- Helping the pupil access lessons and classroom activities
- Encouraging participation and developing learning routines
- Supporting communication and interaction
- Providing regular redirection and clear, consistent boundaries
- Adapting activities and approaches according to the pupil's needs
- Working closely with the class teacher and wider school team
- Supporting the implementation of strategies and targets within the pupil's EHCP
- Monitoring progress, behaviour and engagement
- Helping the pupil develop greater independence and confidence

About You
The school is looking for someone who can provide calm, consistent and experienced support and who understands that positive relationships are central to helping pupils make progress.
Experience supporting children with complex SEMH needs, behaviour difficulties or significant learning barriers would be highly beneficial.
You Should Be
- Experienced working with children with challenging or complex behaviour
- Confident using de-escalation and positive behaviour-support strategies
- Patient, calm and consistent
- Able to maintain clear boundaries while building positive relationships
- Confident supporting pupils who may struggle to engage with traditional classroom learning
- Adaptable and able to think creatively about how to engage a pupil
- Resilient and able to remain calm in challenging situations
- A strong communicator who can work effectively with teachers and other professionals
Experience within mainstream primary schools, PRUs, specialist settings or SEMH provisions would be particularly valuable.
