Role Overview
The Yard Operative supports the safe, efficient, and well-organised operation of the traffic management depot. Reporting to the Depot Manager, the role is responsible for the handling, inspection, maintenance, storage, and preparation of temporary traffic management equipment to ensure it is available and fit for operational use.
The position contributes to the smooth delivery of depot and site operations by maintaining effective stock control, preparing equipment for deployment, and ensuring all yard activities are carried out in accordance with company procedures, risk assessments, health and safety requirements, and relevant legislation.
A key part of the role is maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly working environment. The Yard Operative is expected to identify and report damaged or defective equipment, raise any safety concerns with the Depot Manager, and contribute to improvements in depot processes and working practices. The role involves regular communication and collaboration with the Depot Manager, depot colleagues, and operational teams to support logistics and ensure equipment is available when required.
Key Responsibilities
The Yard Operative is responsible for the receipt, checking, loading, unloading, cleaning, inspection, preparation, and storage of temporary traffic management equipment. All equipment must be handled appropriately and maintained in a condition suitable for deployment. Stock control activities will include production of advance warning signage, recording equipment movements, update inventory information, and using company systems, including the REPS Resourcing Platform, as required.

The Yard Operative is responsible for the battery charging area. This involves ensuring charging equipment and batteries are managed safely, charging processes are monitored, and items are stored correctly once charged. The Yard Operative must maintain good housekeeping within the area, identify any faults or abnormalities, and report defects or safety concerns promptly to the Depot Manager. The Yard Operative will also prepare and manage portable traffic signals and associated equipment. This includes carrying out appropriate checks and testing, confirming that equipment is operational, allocating items in accordance with operational requirements, and ensuring signals are ready for deployment before leaving the depot.
As a direct report to the Depot Manager, the Yard Operative is expected to work positively and cooperatively with colleagues across the depot and operational teams. The role requires consistent adherence to safe working practices, appropriate use of PPE, good standards of housekeeping, and active support for the company’s health, safety, quality, and environmental standards. The Yard Operative will undertake all duties with a strong emphasis on safety, accuracy, reliability, and teamwork, helping to ensure the depot remains compliant, efficient, and ready to support operational requirements.

- Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Supports the effective running of yard operations by identifying issues, reporting defects, and taking proactive steps to maintain safe, efficient, and compliant equipment management.
- Operational Decision-Making: Uses knowledge of yard processes to prioritise tasks, support equipment readiness, and ensure temporary traffic management assets are correctly prepared, maintained, and available for operational requirements.
- Attention to Detail: Completes equipment checks, signal testing, stock movements, charging bay checks, and documentation accurately to ensure equipment remains fit for purpose and compliant.
- Adaptability: Responds positively to changing operational demands, supporting the Depot Manager and operational teams to meet priorities and maintain service delivery.
- Communication: Communicates effectively with the Depot Manager, yard colleagues, and operational teams, providing updates, reporting issues, and ensuring safe working practices and procedures are followed.

Compliance & Risk Management
- Risk Management: Supports a safe working environment by identifying hazards, reporting defects, and following safe working practices to reduce health, safety, and operational risks within the yard.
- Compliance: Ensures all yard operations meet legal, regulatory, and company standards.
- H&S: Demonstrates a strong commitment to health and safety by following PPE requirements, maintaining good housekeeping standards, using equipment safely, and contributing to a positive safety culture across the depot. A strong focus on health and safety, housekeeping, and continuous improvement is required to maintain a compliant, efficient, and audit-ready depot environment.
Operations & Systems
- Process Management: The role requires an understanding of depot processes, equipment management, and safe working practices, including the loading, unloading, inspection, testing, charging, and allocation of equipment.
- ICT: ICT literacy is essential: Accurate stock updates to be recorded on the REPS resourcing platform. Signage printing utilising various software packages.
Full UK Driving Licence will be required.
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday (10hr shifts), 06:00-16:00 or 08:00-18:00
