Year-End Accountant
Vertex Associates are proud to be partnering with a FMCG business in hiring a Year-End Accountant on a 1 month temporary basis.
This role is 5 days in the office based in Hertfordshire.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Complete high-volume balance sheet and account reconciliations, ensuring financial records are accurate and fully supported
- Reconcile bank accounts, payment platforms, merchant service providers, and other key financial accounts
- Review and reconcile sub-ledgers, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and inter-company balances against the general ledger
- Perform detailed analysis of fixed assets, lease accounts, and other balance sheet positions
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies, variances, missing transactions, and reconciliation issues
- Work closely with finance and operational teams to identify and correct the root causes of accounting differences
- Prepare and post journal entries to accurately resolve outstanding reconciliation items
- Produce reconciliation schedules, supporting documentation, and audit-ready work papers
- Monitor aged reconciling items and escalate unresolved issues where appropriate
- Support the year-end close process by ensuring reconciliations are completed accurately and within agreed deadlines
- Strengthen financial controls by identifying risks, unusual transactions, and potential process weaknesses
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives, including automation and enhancement of reconciliation procedures
- Assist in creating and maintaining finance process documentation and best practice guidelines

Desired skills:
- Previous accounting experience with a strong focus on balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls
- Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, general ledger accounting, and accruals
- Advanced Excel skills, including lookups, pivot tables, data analysis, and large-volume data manipulation.
- Proven ability to investigate and resolve financial discrepancies with a methodical approach
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and reconcile complex financial data
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Effective communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict month-end and year-end deadlines
- Continuous improvement mindset with an interest in identifying efficiencies and process enhancements
