Summary
The role of a cost manager is to manage the cost and legal processes of a construction project. As a Cost Manager, your primary responsibility is to help ensure projects are delivered within the client's approved budget.
This includes preparing cost plans, forecasts, cash flow projections, contract documentation and financial reports, while providing clients with clear and accurate advice throughout the project lifecycle. Effective communication and strong attention to detail are key to the role, enabling Cost Managers to keep clients informed of project finances and proactively manage associated risks.
Role Overview
As a Year Out Surveyor, you will join the first year of the G&T Accelerate Programme which combines real responsibility, expert mentoring and accredited training to help you start preparations towards Chartered membership of RICS. Over the course of the programme, you will gain valuable experience across a variety of projects while developing the technical, commercial and leadership skills required to become a successful Surveyor.
The role will be varied, and the actual experience gained will be dependent on the team and sector you are working in.
Working within a team, you will be assisting your line manager with various aspects of daily work. In this role you will be expected to work with a certain level of autonomy while also knowing when to discuss and ask questions to ensure the best outcome.

You will be building a solid knowledge base of your role, the firm and the industry, and how they all fit together.
General Responsibilities
In conjunction with your line manager, responsibilities will typically include:
- Measuring drawings produced by the Design Team, either manually or using measurement software such as CostX.
- Using measurements and knowledge of construction processes to prepare cost plans that establish project budgets for clients.
- Assisting with the preparation of contract documentation, including drawing registers, preliminaries and pricing documents for contractor tenders.
- Supporting the review and comparison of tender returns to help provide recommendations on contractor appointments.
- Preparing cash flow forecasts for projects on behalf of clients.
- Attending site visits and carrying out valuations of completed works, producing the necessary analysis and documentation.
- Supporting value engineering activities to identify opportunities for cost savings and more efficient use of project budgets.
- Attending project meetings and site meetings, including design team meetings and contractor progress meetings, depending on the stage of the project.
- Communicating with a range of stakeholders, including suppliers, contractors, design teams and clients, to obtain quotations, discuss project costs and support the management of project variations.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Good A-Level grades, or an equivalent qualification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively to deadlines.
- Strong team-working skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
- Excellent working knowledge of current IT systems and applications.
- Understanding of the importance of client care and building strong professional relationships.
- Trustworthy, reliable and professional in approach.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proactive and adaptable, with a flexible approach to different situations.
- Demonstrates dedication, commitment and a positive attitude.
