Youth Escort Custody Officer (ECO) in Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS)

Location: Buckingham Vehicle Base, MK18 1TN

Join us as a Youth Escort Custody Officer (ECO) in Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS), where you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of the justice system.


Salary & Benefits

  • Initial Training Salary: £24,596 (35 hours per week)

  • Graduated Base Salary (35 < hours):

    • Current: £28,109
    • From 1st September 2026: £29,205
    • Year 2: £29,932
    • Year 3: £30,496
    • Year 4: £31,063
  • Driving Allowance: £600 per year (subject to terms)

With overtime (typically 8 hours weekly), potential first-year income reaches £34,805.

Shifts: Operate 24/7 across early and late rotations ( rostro 12 weeks in advance). Flexibility is required, with possible completion of unplanned hours. Part-time must be full working days—daily reductions unavailable.


About the Role

As an ECO, you’ll be part of a crew responsible for safely transporting and escorting children and young people through:

  • Collection from secure settings
  • Transport to court proceedings
  • Ensuring welfare and safe handling Plus all associated missions, including searching transport, behaviour management, safeguarding, and documenting procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend briefings and review detainee/route details
  • Conduct safety/vehicle checks under risk assessment
  • Liaise with secure facilities and courthouses
  • Engage, assist, and support young people during transit
  • Oversee detained charges, complete paperwork, and check transfers
  • Manage diverse challenges while assisting especially vulnerable individuals—all with confidentiality and professionalism.

What You Bring

  • Full UK driving licence (Car grades B or B1 essential)
  • Physical fitness to withstand the demands of the role
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • Impressive adaptability under pressure
  • Ability to manage behaviour, de-escalate conflict, and handle emergency decisions with good judgement
  • Capacity to work as part of a team and follow complex processes accurately
  • Demonstrated integrity and respect for confidentiality

Training: Includes a paid 5½-week induction, plus ongoing mentorship from experienced colleagues.

Recruitment Process
