Trends and Indicators Analysis Officer | Grade D
Grade: D Salary: £41,567 Hours: 35 per week Type: Permanent Location: NatureScot offices, hybrid or home working Closing Date: 23 July 2026 (Midnight) Internal Interview Date: 05 August 2026
About the Role
The Trends and Indicators Analysis Officer will deliver NatureScot’s suite of biodiversity indicators, including:
- Scottish Biodiversity Strategy Outcomes reporting
- Contributions to Natural Environment (Scotland) Act statutory target reporting
- Leadership on reporting to JNCC (Joint Nature Conservation Committee) for the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD), including UK-level indicator reporting
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Collaborate across NatureScot and external stakeholders (government agencies, environmental NGOs) to develop and produce trends and indicators.
- Communicate insights clearly—across digital channels, traditional media, and appropriate formats—to maximise understanding and impact both internally and externally.
- Proactively resolve work-related issues, escalating only what requires senior review to the Biodiversity Evidence and Reporting Manager.
- Foster collaboration within the team and across NatureScot departments.
Key Requirements
Skills & Competencies
- Biodiversity knowledge (specialist expertise not necessary, but essential for analysis)
- Strong analytical & mathematical skills for interpreting and communicating trends
- Clear written communication for diverse audiences (technical, policy, and public levels)
- Effective time management, project prioritisation, and a commitment to continuous learning.
- Capacity to managing contracts and data partnerships (e.g., butterfly indicators, breeding bird surveys)
- Wide geographical travel (Scotland, UK) and ability to represent NatureScot—including covering in the manager’s absence when needed.
- Customer service aptitude, interpersonal skills, and health & safety awareness.

Person Specification
Essential Skills
✅ Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant biodiversity, ecology, environmental science, or related field. ✅ Biodiversity & conservation knowledge base. ✅ Clear & effective communication with internal colleagues, external stakeholders, and the public. ✅ Project and time management capabilities. ✅ Ability to translate complex numerical/statistical data into lay-friendly terms. ✅ Willingness to act as NatureScot’s media representative on biodiversity trends and indicators.
Desirable Skills
🔹 Natural capital & ecosystem services knowledge—bonus advantage. 🔹 R programming proficiency for data analysis. 🔹 Scottish/UK/global biodiversity policy familiarity.
Prerequisites
📍 Must be eligible to live/work in the UK and UK resident for the duration. 🔍 Shall complete a Disclosure Scotland application. 🎋 Gaelic is not mandatory, but a desirable skill (supports NatureScot’s Gaelic Language Plan).
