19609 - Youth Justice Worker Returners Scheme
Eligibility Criteria To apply, you must:
- Have left HMPPS within the last 5 years
- Previously worked as a youth justice worker at HMPPS (Band 3 or 4)
- Completed foundation training and full probation period
OR, if you transitioned roles within HMPPS before becoming a youth justice worker:
- Completed full probation in your prior role
- Worked as a youth justice worker for more than 12 months before leaving
The scheme also includes former youth justice workers currently employed in the MoJ (excluding HMPPS) or other government departments.
HMPPS reserves the right to refuse reappointment due to poor attendance or performance history.
Key Requirements To be considered for the role, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the start of employment
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements
- Eligibility groups include:
- UK nationals, Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth workers with UK right-to-work
- EU/Swiss/Norwegian/Icelandic/Liechtenstein nationals with settled/pre-settled status under EUSS (or applied by 31/12/2020)
- Turkish nationals with accrued Civil Service right-to-work
- Eligibility groups include:
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment
- Fit for physically active duties
- Meet eyesight standards (with/without corrective lenses)
- Meet hearing requirements (without hearing aids)
- Tattoos cannot be offensive, discriminatory, or intimidating; visible tattoos (including facial) beyond cultural/religious/medical reasons are generally undesirable
Application Process
- Submit up to two YOI preferences for reallocation.
- Eligibility confirmed? You’ll be:
- Directly matched to an available vacancy (if any)
- Invited to a medical and fitness assessment
- Undergo pre-employment checks (including occupational health)
- If vacancies are unavailable at your preferred YOIs, you’ll enter a merit list for prioritised consideration on future openings.

Salary and Hours Locations/Regions: Feltham, Werrington, Wetherby (Yorkshire/West Midlands) Salaries (yearly, based on 2026/27 tax year and 20% unsocial hours allowance):
- Band 3 (37 hours/week):
- Werrington/Wetherby: £36,150–£40,710
- Feltham: £40,199–£45,269
- Band 4 (fixed at 37 hours/week):
- Werrington/Wetherby: £41,328
- Feltham: £45,446 Additional market supplements (£1,500–£3,500) may apply.
🔹 Scheduled shifts include evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays (counted toward holiday allowance). Default shift pattern is 39 hours/week.
Professional Development
- After 12 months’ probation: Opportunity for qualification focused on supporting children/young people in custody (Level 4).
- Post-certification: Progression to Band 4 Youth Justice Worker Specialist role.
- Ongoing training in child protection and safeguarding.
