This varied and challenging career offers opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, and a unique working environment where you could be a peacekeeper, counsellor, teacher, and mentor all in one day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with prisoners, helping them during what may be one of the lowest points in their lives.
  • Maintain positive, professional, and constructive relationships while maintaining safety standards.
  • Operate as part of a close-knit team, ensuring that HMP Channings Wood, staff, and public remain safe.
  • Work varied shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Carry out a range of duties that keep prisoners engaged, secure, and prepared for reintegration into society.

Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years old at the start of employment.
  • Meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements (see below for details).
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment (including eyesight and hearing tests).
  • Hold a suitable standard of hearing (not Australian or otherwise, unless specifically waived by UKAD).
  • Do not have any tattoos judged as discriminatory, offensive, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
  • In high-security prisons (Category A), you must have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.

Travel to Work: While owning a vehicle and a driving licence is beneficial, it is not essential unless specified in a particular posting.

Nationality Requirements

Eligible applicants include:

  • UK nationals
  • Republic of Ireland nationals
  • Commonwealth country nationals with the right to work in the UK
  • EU nationals, citizens of Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, and their family members, provided they have settled or pre-settled status under EUSS or have made a valid application.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
