Prison Officer – HMP Lewes (Grade 3) – Band V

Location: HMP Lewes, Brighton Rd, Lewes, BN7 1EA

Pay: Starting salary: £36,816 (39-hour week, inclusive of 20% unsocial hours allowance)

About the Role

It’s not your typical job—prison officers play critical, varied roles like peacekeeper, counsellor, educator, and enforcer. You’ll work directly with prisoners, helping to protect the public and manage criminal behaviour in a challenging but results-driven environment.

Core Responsibilities

You will:

  • Ensure prisonnier safety and security in the prison environment
  • Maintain order by implementing legislation, maintaining high standards of discipline, and enforcing rules
  • Support the well-being of prisoners through rehabilitation programmes, vocational training and other interventions, actively collaborating with social workers and probation officers
  • Conduct safe movement of prisoners between establishments or for court and legal processes
  • Conduct searches and oversee one-off or regular property movements; document findings accurately

Your duties relate to a range of responsibilities from maintaining law and order to providing advice on basic needs and law.

Key Areas

  • Security: Gate control, intrinsic house arrests, preventing incidents involving violence or misuse of drugs
  • Crime monitoring: Reporting suspicious traffic, compliance issues and joint collaboration with law enforcement
  • Education and rehabilitation: Ensuring voluntary support of educational, detention and better-off schemes
  • Integrating calls for rehab (substance abuse, vocational training): Reflects behaviour of benefits of an improved relationship with external industry links and GBS
  • Days and clearances for remanded prisoners: Weekly reviews without missing deadlines given for orientations

Basic Necessities
