Responsibilities
- Maintain security, safety, and order within high-operation prisons
- Form professional relationships with prisoners, building trust to facilitate rehabilitation
- Support vulnerable individuals, often at their lowest points
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to uphold
- Respond to emergencies requiring decisive action (e.g., conflict resolution)
- Support operational tasks like prisoner care, education, and parole assistance
Requirements
Eligibility
✅ Age: At least 18 years old ✅ Right to Work: Must meet Civil Service eligibility requirements (visit to check British, Irish or EU rights or Commonwealth eligibility) ✅ Residency: If applying for a Category A high-security prison post, must have lived in the UK for three years

Physical & Medical Standards
- Pass a medical (blood pressure, hearing vision)
- Both sight standard (corrective lenses permitted) + must hear normally without aids
- Fitness requirements to be assessed as part of the recruitment process

Salaries & working Arrangements (39-hour week varies)
Base salary: £36,816 (including 20% unsocial hours allowance for shifts worked outside standard hours)
- 37hrs/week → £34,928/year
- 39hrs/week → £36,816/year
- 41hrs/week → £39,334/year
Shift patterns cover 24/7 operations including weekends and bank holidays.

Some prisons are in rural areas, so own transport is highly beneficial, though not always mandatory. Fixed shift timings mean you must ensure timeliness.
